Kitty’s immediate plans to assist Matt the next morning with the investigation were somewhat stymied by the realisation that there was a Jubilee committee meeting scheduled at Mrs Ponsonby-Bell’s home.

‘I wish I could get out of going to this wretched meeting,’ Kitty grumbled as she finished her breakfast.

‘It will only take an hour or so,’ Matt said soothingly as he tried to divert the kitten from pouncing on his slippers under the table. Bertie had accepted a sausage to make up for his injured feelings and was watching the cat from a safe distance.

‘Even so, it’s very annoying.’ Kitty patted the corners of her mouth carefully with her linen napkin. ‘Especially when we have so much to do.’

‘While you are with the ladies, I’ll call into Paignton and try to see Felicia. She should be at the picture house changing out the foyer advertising today before the matinee later.’ Matt peered under the table to where his wife was busily extricating her new pet from the hem of his trousers.

‘What shall we name her?’ Kitty asked as she emerged clutching the tiny kitten to her bosom.

‘You are definitely keeping her then?’ Matt grinned.

Kitty gave him a look. He knew full well that she had intended keeping the kitten from the moment she had rescued it from the alley. ‘I shall give her name some thought.’

Matt kissed her on the cheek as she placed the kitten safely back in its basket. ‘I shall too. I’ll meet you back here when you’ve finished with Mrs C and company. Hopefully Felicia may be able to tell us more about Peggy and her book.’
