CHAPTER SIXTEEN
The next morning unfolded as mornings usually did: Ginger rose early to feed Rosa, Basil popped in to play with her, and then they met in the morning room for breakfast. Basil headed to his office at Scotland Yard and Ginger to her study at the back of the house. At some point, she met with Mrs. Beasley to plan the meals for the day or week, and then, if need be, she would go into either her office at Feathers & Flair or Lady Gold Investigations and sometimes both.
She was seated at her desk, formerly her fatherâs desk, which had a decidedly masculine feel. The desk was a large, heavy wooden structure with ornate trim around the edges of the top and on the legs. Her desk faced a stone fireplace, and a stocked bookshelf took up most of the wall along the window.
Ginger opened the last envelope that had come to her in the post, from a supplier of fabric from the Continent announcing new designs, and she put it in the pile of things to attend to for her dress shop. She was interrupted by a knock on the door. It was cracked open, and she saw her butler standing on the other side.
âCome in, Digby,â she said lightly.
Shorter and more rotund than Pippins, Digby stepped inside and held out a silver salver. On it was a single envelope. âThis came by messenger, madam.â
Ginger accepted the envelope, which had only her name, Mrs. Basil Reed, neatly written on the front, and no indication as to who it was from. âThank you, Digby,â Ginger said with a nod. The butler recognised his dismissal and left her alone with the mystery letter.
Opening it, Ginger sucked in a breath of surprise. The short missive was from the Duke of Worthington and was written on thick paper with the ducal crest at the top.
Dear Mrs. Reed,
I hope this letter finds you well. Please forgive me for getting right to the point, but I fear thereâs no time for pleasantries under the circumstances.
As you know, my beautiful Hazel has been taken from me most viciously. Of course, I recall the part you played in solving the murder of my brother and his wife, and I am asking you, most humbly, if youâd be willing to work on this case for me. Itâs not that I donât have confidence in the police, but I know they are busy and distracted, and unfortunately, my Hazel isnât the only murder under investigation. I want to employ someone with experience and positive results to focus solely on my Hazelâs death and to track down her killer. I would most appreciate it if that person was you.
If you are willing, please contact me at my residence.
Yours most sincerely,
Worthington
