“Are you eating enough? You look skinny,” Genny’s mother bleated over the video call.

“Mum, I can only see your nose, hold the phone further away from your face,” Genny grinned. “And yes, I’m eating.”

She was sat in the back garden of The Mudlark with a cup of coffee in hand, enjoying the view of the swans on the river.

“Is this better?” Her mum asked, holding the phone at an awkward angle with both hands.

“It’ll do, Mum,” Genny replied with a small smile.

“Ash told me you’ve started helping out on this murder case at the lighthouse,” her mum said.

Damn it, Ash, Genny thought.

“She wasn’t supposed to tell you that,” she groaned.

“Well, I’m glad she did. We’re both worried about you.”

“I’m fine, I promise. I told her that I wouldn’t be able to get the case out of my head otherwise. I’m doing this in a healthy way, I promise. The DI is doing all the work, I’m just helping him put the puzzle pieces into place.”

“I think you need a hobby,” her mum persisted. “Take up tennis instead of all this murder business. Work on your recipes for when the bakery opens.”

“I don’t have a kitchen at the moment, Mum,” Genny laughed.

“Well then… rambling. Or knitting. I find it very therapeutic.”

“Mum, I’m okay, I swear. I wouldn’t undo all the work I’ve done over the past two years by risking it, I promise. I’m being healthy about this.”

“Fine,” her mum said, unconvinced. “How is the cottage coming along?”

“The substitute contractors have made some progress, but they say it will still be a while longer. Another week, maybe.”

“Well, that’s not too far away, I suppose,” her mum smiled.

“Genny!” Bev’s voice came from the guest lounge. “There’s a man here for you!”

“A man?!” Genny’s mum laughed salaciously. “It sounds like you already have a hobby.”

“No, Mum, it’s DI Cochran,” Genny explained. “The man in charge of the murder case.”

“Oh,” her mum replied, her excitement dropping. “Just be safe my darling. I worry about you.”

“I’m doing great, Mum, please stop worrying. And tell Ash not to worry either.”

“I will,” her Mum replied.

“Oh, sorry,” Remy said as he came out of the back door of the inn. “I didn’t mean to interrupt your call.”

“Is that him?!” Her mum laughed. “Oh, he’s dishy. Now I understand why you’re helping…”

“Mum! I really have to go! Speak later!”

She hung up the call before she could say anything else inappropriate.

“I’m so sorry if you heard that,” Genny said to Remy, flushing a little pink.

He smirked, “I promise that I wasn’t listening.”

“Good,” Genny sighed. “Are we heading out?”

“Ready when you are,” Remy said as she stood up. He added with a cheeky air, “It’s been a while since I heard someone say the word ‘dishy’.”
