CHAPTER 10

Abby hadn't done a single thing all day, and it still felt like there wasn't a moment to think. Not a one. Poor Ava had made mess after mess, painting at the table and then on the table, stacking blocks before deciding to toss them around the room. But now, thankfully, she'd found a bit of distraction in the cartoon Abby had turned on. Lunch was still scattered about the table along with the paintings, and the sink was full of dirty dishes, but Abby was feeling tired to her core, unable to even adjust to a more comfortable position. Besides, moving might mean sickness, and she'd had enough of that to last a thousand lifetimes.

Usually, her mother-in-law, Felicia, would be able to come over for part of the day, or even take Ava to her house. But not today. She was out running errands, and Abby could swear the day had turned against her, moving in time to the slowest ticking clock in existence. When her phone buzzed, her spirits lifted at the thought of talking to Chase. But then she saw her father's name on the screen. Her lip twisted with indecision.

She clicked answer and pushed the speaker button, too tired to hold the phone to her ear. "Hello?" She tried to keep the exhaustion out of her voice, but she could hear it, anyway.

"Hey, honey." Her father sounded tired too. For a moment, her woes were forgotten as she wondered what his life had been like the past few days. She'd been so shocked at his accusation and arrest that she hadn't known what to do. She should have called him. It ate at her that she hadn't. But she felt betrayed and fooled. The thought that he might have been using her as a ruse to his past life was so humiliating, she couldn't bring herself to confront him. Even the thought had her cheeks flushing with anger. Unsure what to say, she waited. Her eyes were nearly closed when he spoke again.

"I'm so sorry to bring this into your life. When I saw Quinton, it hit me harder than anything ever has. I knew I should never have come back, that I was only bringing harm into the goodness you'd fought so hard to surround yourself with." He spoke methodically and gently, pausing often as if allowing her to interject when she wanted. But she was still too tired. "You deserve everything in life, dearest Abigail. Both Ava and this new baby are so lucky to have a mother like you. If I'm taken from their lives, it will be deserved because I can never pay for the past and for leaving you. It will never cease to be a debt I owe. All my work has only ever been for you. You’re the one who saved me, even though I abandoned you. These events I can’t be completely innocent of. I chose those crimes in years past. They follow me."

He fell into silence, and Abby held still, focusing on the words of her father, so honest and deep.
