Chapter 10

Sonia made sure she had plenty of food spread out on the table. After receiving Nikki’s text that she was on the way with some important information, she began preparing the food. Nikki had a tendency not to eat when she was caught up in something, and with her already thin frame, Sonia wanted to make sure she had lots of energy and she didn’t want to see her lose an ounce of weight.

A knock on the front door sent Princess running for it.

“Come on in, Nikki.” Sonia headed back to the kitchen to pour them both a drink.

“Hi baby, hi gorgeous.” Nikki cooed over Princess as they both entered the dining room. “It is so beautiful and sunny out there. It is surprisingly warm for this time of year.”

“It is.” Sonia smiled.

“Sonia, I think we have a lead.”

“Oh?” Sonia set the glasses down on the table. “Is it Nunzio?”

“No, Cheryl Palson. She’s one of Delores’ clients. Quinn found out that she had a run-in with Laura before. When her dog Charlie escaped onto a neighboring property. Apparently, she turned up to pick him up, but they couldn’t find him. Charlie was fine, of course, but Cheryl was furious. Not only did she confront Laura at the kennels, but she even showed up at Laura’s home, banged on the door, and when she didn’t let her in, she threatened that she would make her pay the next time she saw her.” Nikki sat down at the table and sighed. “This looks delicious, thank you so much. How did you know I’d be starving?”

“Oh, I know.” Sonia frowned as she sat down across from her. “So, you think Cheryl went after Laura again?”

“I definitely think it’s possible. With her history of threatening Laura and even going to the lengths of finding her home address so that she could confront her there as well, that shows some determination to cause trouble.” Nikki picked up a cucumber sandwich and popped it into her mouth.

“Maybe, but wasn’t Charlie at the kennels at the time? I wonder why she even took him back there after what happened. Do you really think she would risk attacking Laura when her own dog was there?” Sonia asked.

“I’m not sure. I say we have a conversation with her about it and see where it leads.” Nikki’s voice wavered some.

“Are you okay?” Sonia’s eyes popped open as she heard the tremor in her voice. “What’s happened?”

“Oh, just the conversation with Detective Wayne. I’m not sure if I’m angry or scared or just tired. I wish the man would just do his job and stop looking at me like I’m a murderer.” Nikki shook her head as she continued to nibble at the food on the table.

“From the outside looking in, it may not seem like he’s doing much. But we can’t focus on that. We need to focus on what we can do.”

“Speaking of which, did you hear about the housekeeper getting hurt during the latest burglary?” Nikki gazed into her friend’s eyes.
