Chapter 9
I sat in stunned silence. Even though Iâm not a best-selling author, I do sell a fair number of books and make a decent living at it. I suppose at some point every writer has a stalker. Iâve never had a fan show up at my door before and that was more than somewhat disconcerting, especially since he showed up at the hotel. I did wonder if he was the one who had broken into my apartment or had put the key over the door. How had he gotten a key? That was the scary part.
âI take it you know him.â Samâs tone was flat. âWhy didnât you tell me you knew him, Harper?â
âI donât, I didnât,â I stuttered. âHow, how did he find me?â
âTell me, from the beginning.â
âUm, well, he started following me on social media. Then he started sending fan emails. I typically respond to people.â I started to twist my hands. âHe then started saying he loved me and wanted to take me out on dates. I ignored those and didnât respond.â
Taking a deep breath, I continued, âI also really donât put anything really personal out on social media, so I didnât think much about it.â
âWhat happened?â
âHe started sending me photos of places where I had been, photos of me with friends, photos of me and my ex-husbandâ¦before he became my ex-husband. Heâd say things like âI could be here with youâ or âWeâd have so much fun together.â Then he sent me pictures of my husband with another womanâ¦â I paused, it was still very painful and even harder to verbalize, âin a compromising position.â
âSheet Olympics,â murmured Sam.
I nodded. âI havenât heard that term before but yes. Danny said he loved me and would never do to me what my husband was doing, that he would never cheat on me.â
âDid you report him?â
I just looked at Sam. The thought of âyouâre a special kind of stupidâ bounced around in my brain. Instead, I said, âWhat do you think? Yes, but you and I both know virtually nothing is going to be done. It only shows a paper trail on the off chance that Iâm murdered or something. Then everyone will lament about how the system has failed once again, how the system is broken, what a nice person I was, blah, blah, blah.â
Sam merely nodded his head in agreement. âHarper, how do you think he found you?â
Almost breaking down in tears, I hate all these emotions that keep springing up, I semi-wailed, âNo clue. Thatâs your job. You find out how heâs done this. Iâll file harassment charges against him. Send him back to wherever he lives. Make him leave me alone.â
Sam looked a little awkward, which was kind of surprising considering all the strange people he encounters. Maybe he doesnât run into emotional females very often. I donât run into this side of meâ¦ever.
âIs this the reason why you moved back to Palm Park? Danny Willis caused you to get a divorce from your
