âThanks for coming with me today, Kara,â Rota said as we stepped out of her cherry red â69 convertible Couple DeVille. âI wonât keep you long.â
âLike I had a choice,â I muttered.
âI heard that,â Rota said.
âAs your campaign manager, Rota,â Link said, âIâll advise you to remind your family the necessity of maintaining a united front.â
I rolled my eyes and repeated what Rota had just said. âI heard that.â
Link grinned, green and purple pixie dust leaking from one wing. âGood. You were meant to.â
I was feeling anxious. And it wasnât entirely because I was about to meet new people. After weâd spoken to Sal and Miranda, Zane had driven us back to his house. Even though we hadnât spoken about it, I knew he was wrestling with what Sal had told us. It was fairly obvious that Sal had mortally wounded all four supernaturals, and Laticia Barnswallow had helped him clean up the mess.
âFirst up is the daycare,â Link said as he zipped ahead of me through the community centerâs front door. âThey have both a morning and afternoon session.â
âAbout how many kids per session?â Rota asked.
âThey average eighteen in the morning,â Link said, âand fifteen in the afternoon.â
âSo smaller crowd right now,â I said. âThatâs good.â
Link snickered as we headed toward the welcome desk. âYou afraid of a handful of supernatural kids?â
âIf you arenât,â I countered, âthen youâre a fool.â
Rota threw back her head and laughed. âSheâs right, Link.â
The fairy behind the desk smiled and rose from her chair. âGood afternoon. Iâm so glad youâre stopping by Ms. Rota. We havenât had an elected official stop by inâ¦well, never.â
âThis wasnât a place Dagon visited?â I asked with just enough snipe in my statement to make Link glare at me.
The fairy chuckled. âNo, maâam. But he made sure Mystic Cove did its financial responsibility.â
âWell,â Rota said, âyou can rest assure, Bella, that I intend to visit often if elected in the next mayoral race.â
Bella beamed. âExcellent!â She hurried around the desk, her petite frame stopping next to me. âYou must be Rotaâs granddaughter. Itâs lovely to meet you.â
I shook her hand and followed silently behind as Bella gave us the tour. When she stopped in front of a red and yellow door, my heart tripped. It wasnât that I disliked kidsâ¦Iâd just never been around them. The elderly Sensei who raised me was extremely private, electing to educate me at home. Which meant I was only around other people when I was in the dojo.
I peeked inside the doorâs window and nearly backed out of the entire deal. The kids inside the room were literally hanging from the ceiling rafters! Not even joking.
And then a thought hit me. Could Zane father children? If he could, had he fathered any already? I never thought Iâd have children. Being abandoned and brought up in a home where my father-figure was in his seventies didnât really foster a lot of maternal instincts. Plus, being in law enforcement, it never seemed like a good idea.
