CHAPTER FOURTEEN
Emma opened the door to the apartment she shared with her partner and allowed Pearl to enter before her.
âRyanâs doing some work in one of the orchards,â she explained, âso we wonât be disturbed here.â She invited Pearl to take a seat at a large pine kitchen table then moved to the sink to fill a kettle, leaving Pearl to glance around the open-plan living space. It was tidy, with few personal possessions on display, although a red sofa was scattered with what looked like handmade cushions decorated with multi-coloured pom-poms. A few stained-glass panels hung at the window allowing sunlight to stream through them, creating patterns that danced on the wall. A heart-shaped photo frame showed Emma and Ryan smiling for the camera in Mount Ephraimâs grounds. Pearl eyed an oak breadboard on the table, shaped like a rabbit. Emma joined Pearl at the table and said, âAll Ryanâs handiwork. He did it with a jigsaw in his workshop one afternoon. Must have been a bit bored.â
Pearl gave a smile and nodded towards the photo. âHave you been together long?â
âThree years,â said Emma. âWe met here at the house. This apartment comes with the job. Our own little world.â She remained silent until the kettle boiled, sending a plume of steam up a kitchen window pane.
âWould you like some tea?â
Pearl nodded. âThanks.â She watched Emma prepare two mugs of tea which she brought to the table with some cake.
âLemon drizzle,â she explained. âMy own recipe.â
After handing Pearl a slice, she sat down and suddenly took on a grave expression as she waited for Pearlâs first question. âYou wanted to talk to me?â
Pearl nodded. âI take it youâve been in touch with the owners of the house?â
Emma frowned. âYes, of course, but communicationâs difficult,â she explained. âTheyâre on a cruise ship right now but theyâll be docking in Sydney in a few daysâ time when theyâre due to meet relatives.â
âSo theyâre not returning straight away?â
Emma shook her head. âBut that doesnât mean theyâre not as shocked about this as we are. Iâm keeping them updated and I believe theyâre helping the police with enquiries as best as they can from so far away.â
Pearl took something from her pocket and placed it on the table. Emma looked at her. âWhatâs this?â
âA piece of yellow fabric. Does it look at all familiar? Perhaps itâs from an article of clothing â belonging to you or Ryan?â
Emma picked up the plastic bag and eyed the piece of woollen material inside. She shook her head. âWhere did you get this?â
âIn the grounds last night,â said Pearl. âNear the cricket pavilion. I heard a womanâs voice. When I got there, she was gone. But I found this.â
Emma looked surprised. âHave you told the police?â she asked as she handed the packet back. Pearl nodded. âI gave some of it to a uniformed officer this morning.â
âSome?â
âI kept this small piece so I could ask some questions of my own.â She eyed Emma, who hastily picked up her mug and sipped her tea.
