DS Carmichael handed Sylvia a cup of tea and a mini packet of custard creams.

‘Following on from our interview earlier, in which we informed you a witness has claimed they saw you kill Penelope Wyndham, can I ask you again whether you did?’

Sylvia let out a sigh. ‘I absolutely did not and anyone telling you that is fabricating it. They cannot have evidence because it did not happen. I can only assume someone is trying to set me up.’ She paused. ‘I know my rights. I’d like you to either charge me or release me.’

DS Carmichael shook her head. ‘Can't do that, I'm afraid. There's more, unfortunately.’

Sylvia frowned.

‘Are you sure you don’t want legal advice?’

‘Perfectly. I’ve done nothing wrong.’

The detective continued. ‘The crime scene investigators found blood on the fairy lights that were used to kill Penelope. This blood matches familial DNA we have on our database.'

Sylvia gulped.

'Given the DNA on our system also links with you, it will be tested further against the samples taken when we arrested you, to see if it matches yours.’

Sylvia nodded.

'All police officers have their DNA tested and stored for elimination purposes,' DS Carmichael explained. 'Do you understand what this means?'
