âEt alors,â she said. âThereâs a public phone near the bridge by the old brick pump house.â
âAnd you happen to know this how?â
âI passed it en route,â said Aimée. âThe homeless mecs use it. Itâs in clear view. Go check.â
âI did.â
âThereâre a lot of details he got wrong in this.â
âHe?â
âItâs got to be the killer who identified me. Yet where Melac was killed wasnât by the drawbridge. The bridge by the murder scene is narrow and arched and for pedestrians only. This writerâs confusing it with the Crimée bridge farther up the canal, the only drawbridge left in Paris.â
Heâd made a mistake. Gotten it confused. Of course, she reasoned, heâd been following Melac, whoâd been up by the bakeryâand the baker had witnessed someone fiddling with the Crimée bridge. Maybe heâd been planning to attack Melac there but Melac had changed direction and gone to meet her.
âGet this analyzed.â
âWe did. Theyâre eighty percent sure itâs not a woman.â
âAdd my twenty percent.â
She read the handwritten note nextâa photocopy, torn from a grid-lined sheet and labeled with a police stamp: GRIDDED NOTEBOOK SHEET WITH BALLPOINT PEN.
Le Balafréâs back. I saw him near the canal. His old haunts. He killed my friendâs sister. I told anyone whoâd listen that Iâd seen him and he didnât look like the police drawing. Anyone whoâd listen but they ignored me. Her brother didnât see him well in the elevator since he didnât have his glasses on. But he felt guilty and nervous because he should have watched out for his sister while his maman worked at night. Not let her go to the birthday party. He was afraid to tell his maman, he told me later. He was trying to help and then no one cared if he changed his mind. They wanted a face to look for.
