“Et alors,” she said. “There’s a public phone near the bridge by the old brick pump house.”

“And you happen to know this how?”

“I passed it en route,” said Aimée. “The homeless mecs use it. It’s in clear view. Go check.”

“I did.”

“There’re a lot of details he got wrong in this.”

“He?”

“It’s got to be the killer who identified me. Yet where Melac was killed wasn’t by the drawbridge. The bridge by the murder scene is narrow and arched and for pedestrians only. This writer’s confusing it with the Crimée bridge farther up the canal, the only drawbridge left in Paris.”

He’d made a mistake. Gotten it confused. Of course, she reasoned, he’d been following Melac, who’d been up by the bakery—and the baker had witnessed someone fiddling with the Crimée bridge. Maybe he’d been planning to attack Melac there but Melac had changed direction and gone to meet her.

“Get this analyzed.”

“We did. They’re eighty percent sure it’s not a woman.”

“Add my twenty percent.”

She read the handwritten note next—a photocopy, torn from a grid-lined sheet and labeled with a police stamp: GRIDDED NOTEBOOK SHEET WITH BALLPOINT PEN.

Le Balafré’s back. I saw him near the canal. His old haunts. He killed my friend’s sister. I told anyone who’d listen that I’d seen him and he didn’t look like the police drawing. Anyone who’d listen but they ignored me. Her brother didn’t see him well in the elevator since he didn’t have his glasses on. But he felt guilty and nervous because he should have watched out for his sister while his maman worked at night. Not let her go to the birthday party. He was afraid to tell his maman, he told me later. He was trying to help and then no one cared if he changed his mind. They wanted a face to look for.
