Dangerous Act

ROSEMARY

“Whoa. Look at this place!” The room wasn’t a luxury deluxe stateroom by any means—it was still a crew cabin after all—but it was still a really nice room. There were two small porthole windows and a full-sized bed. A small sitting area was situated by a kitchen-like space with a microwave and mini-fridge.

“Can you believe this? He’s got this huge bed all to himself while we’re slumming it in tiny twin beds! I wouldn’t mind living here, that’s for darn sure.”

Margie opened the door to his bathroom and let out an appreciative whistle. “And look at the size of this shower! You can bathe an elephant in here!”

Doris pinched the bridge of her nose. “Can we just focus on clues, please? And no one touch anything! We don’t want our fingerprints all over this place.”

“Alright, alright. Don’t get your panties in a bunch,” I said, even though I really wanted to flop down on that huge soft bed and take a little nap.

“We’re in and out in five minutes, okay?” Doris said. “Five minutes! The last thing we need is someone walking in here and catching us.”

“Relax. Who’s gonna come in here? Carl’s ghost?”

“Rosie!” Margie yelped. “Don’t make jokes like that!”

“Focus, everyone!” Doris growled at us before turning to Patty Sue. “What are we looking for exactly?”

Patty Sue scratched her head and looked around. “Notes? Letters? Maybe someone already threatened him.”

“Alright, that shouldn’t be hard. At least he’s neat.”

I pulled down the sleeves of my sweater to cover up my hands, then pulled open the cabinets and rifled through the shelves. There was nothing but cereal boxes and bags of trail mix. He had a single bowl, a single plate, and a slew of plastic silverware in there. I reckoned he wasn’t one for hosting guests.

I moved to the closet, which was also significantly bigger than ours. When I turned the knob, the last thing I expected was a waterfall of leather bags bursting through the door. I gave out a loud shriek before Doris ran over and clamped her hand over my mouth.

“Shhhh, Rosie! Are you trying to get us in trouble?”

“Swa-ree,” I said, my words muffled from behind her hand. “I was surprised.”

A dozen or more bags had fallen on the floor. It looked like I was standing in a sea of slick, shiny leather. There were designer handbags in different shapes and sizes and colors.

“What in the name of…” Patty Sue mumbled. She plucked one up with a covered hand and squinted at it like she was studying an alien life form.

What in the world is going on? Prada. Chanel. Louis Vuitton. Why does Carl have all these women’s handbags stuffed in his closet?

“This is so bizarre,” Doris said. “I have never even seen Carl walk around with a backpack. He looked more like a stuff-everything-in-your-pockets kind of guy.”

“Maybe he’s a collector? And these bags are vintage?” said Margie. She picked up a black Prada bag. It was nylon with a fancy gold chain. “Oooh, this one is nice.
