Chapter Eight

‘He must have tripped up,’ Liam breathed, in disbelief. John’s body had come to rest halfway between the cliff top and the landing stage. His eyes were staring sightlessly up at them. ‘He must have fallen down the steps. Just like Twinkle.’

Suzy Heigl clutched her husband’s arm tightly. Her face was pale and her jaw slack.

Adam Cartwright, who after Jill had been first on the scene, was already bounding down the steps towards the body.

‘Be careful,’ Nadia called out to him, but he waved away her concern.

‘Oh, my baby!’ Jill sobbed desperately. ‘My sweet baby!’

Nadia moved across and took the trembling woman in her arms. This was more than anyone could be expected to cope with. What on earth had John been doing out here? she wondered. And how had he come to slip like that? Had he really slipped at all? She stroked Jill’s hair for a minute, attempting to calm her down, but her own mind was in turmoil too. Another death. How was that possible? This weekend was becoming an absolute nightmare.

Adam had reached the body. He bent down – Nadia could see him, over Jill’s shoulder – and tentatively took in the scene at close quarters. ‘I think he may have been down here for a while,’ he called back.

That was not too much of a surprise. Nobody had seen John since he went to bed last night.

‘You’d better not touch anything,’ Liam shouted down to him.

‘I wasn’t intending to.’ Adam took a moment to fix the scene in his mind; then he made his way cautiously back up to the others. Liam and Suzy stepped to one side to allow him back onto the top of the cliff. Adam stood silently for a moment, regarding the small group of friends. ‘I’m no expert,’ he said at last, a haunted look in his eye. ‘I suppose he might have tripped and fallen. But there seems to have been a pretty severe blow to the side of his head. It could just be the fall, but...’

Samantha had already discounted that possibility. ‘It’s too much of a coincidence,’ she said. ‘Two people tripping up. Two people dying. It has to be deliberate.’

Suzy let out a yelp of horror. ‘You don’t really think...?’ Her hand dropped from her husband’s arm.

Samantha nodded grimly. ‘I think someone pushed him. And I think someone pushed Twinkle too.’

There was a shocked silence. Samantha was only saying what everyone else was thinking, but hearing it spoken out loud like that made it seem so much more real. Could it really be true? Nadia shuddered. Could somebody have done this deliberately? She released her grip on Jill Clarke.

The red-haired woman was clutching a mobile phone in her hand. ‘I found this on the grass just over there,’ she mumbled, holding it up so everyone could see. ‘That’s...that’s why I came over here. It’s John phone.’ The device was small and blue in colour. ‘I suppose I shouldn’t have picked it up, but I didn’t...I didn’t know.
