TWENTY-NINE
Krista sat in her idling squad car in one of the ski parking lots below the Mountain Inn and recalled the first time sheâd met Skip Forrester. Bill had brought Skip into a murder investigation the previous winter. Krista had been nervous when they first met, and rightly so, given that she was a lowly communications officer and he was an FBI special agent. Next thing she knew, they were careening down the mountain in the high-speed pursuit of a prime suspect with her behind the wheel.
Whew. Kristaâs heart rate jumped. What a day that was.
She had been naive then, but she and Skip had come a long way in the last five months. A long way. They had plans to meet in Charlottesville on Friday night. She had the weekend off, and the boys would stay with Tyler. Skip had picked out a new restaurant, a seafood place not far from the downtown mall. They would have a glass of wine first, stroll to the restaurant for a meal and another glass of wine, and then head back to the hotel, where they were not, repeat not, staying in separate rooms. And how did she feel about that? Well, good, actually. She was thirty-seven, financially independent, and doing a first-rate job of raising her kids. But she did get lonely once in a while, and the thing with Skip, whatever she wanted to call it, certainly helped with that. Gave her something to look forward to. Uh-huh.
A concrete mixer rambled past on its way up the mountain, startling Krista from her daydream. Time to get to work. She speed-dialed Skip.
âHey, babe,â he said, after picking up on the first ring. âWhatâs up?â
Babe. Were they at the babe stage? Was that a disrespectful term or merely a term of endearment?
A term of endearment, she decided, which did not wholly allay her concern. Skip had clearly crossed the term-of-endearment bridge, but had she? No. Not consciously. And when she did, what would she call Skip? Babe? Sweetie? Hon? Jeez.
âUm, hey, Skip. Believe it or not, this is a work-related call.â
âWork-related? Iâm intrigued.â
Krista filled Skip in on the investigation and their difficulty researching Lily Wolfâs background. Bill OâShea suggested she call Skip to see if he had access to information they didnât.
âBill asked you to call me?â said Skip.
âYes.â
âWhy didnât he call me himself?â
Kim had asked herself that same question and reached the same conclusion that Skip did now.
âI know why,â said Skip. âHe asked you to call because he knows weâre seeing each other, and he believed Iâd be more likely to help you than to help him.â
âAre you? More likely to help me?â
âOf course I am. But thatâs beside the point. Please do this for me. Tell Bill that I am not in debt to him any longer. He is in debt to me.â
âYou bet.â
Krista let silence take hold of the conversation, knowing that Skip would re-engage soon enough.
âOkay,â he said. âGive me what you have on Lily Wolf.â
Krista shared their limited intel.
