TWENTY-FIVE
Sarah slept badly, realising halfway through the night that, if Charles and Francesca Diggory were no longer suspects, as theyâd been on a cozy holiday together during the crucial time when the newspaper (and Gus) found their way into the trunk in February, then Bill Turbot was probably now the most likely suspect.
Sheâd heard from multiple sources that Bill had been banned from the Jolly Roger by Gus, whose sense of humour disguised a hair-trigger temper. Bill was the type of man whose swagger and predatory ways with the ladies hid a fragile sense of self-esteem. Sheâd seen this for herself when heâd made a beeline for her in the pub, and then swerved away at a momentâs notice and gone to sulk in a corner when knocked off course. He would, surely, have been furious that Gus had publicly humiliated him by throwing him out of his favourite bar. Revenge could easily have been the next logical step.
There was also the fact that so many of Sarahâs suspects had now fallen by the wayside. The Mermaids were out, as they hadnât used the hut during the period in question. The Tai Chi group had been having a break. The Crazy Gang were not crazy at all in person.
No, there was only one outstanding candidate for the job of Merstairs murderer â and it was Bill Turbot.
Having come to this conclusion in the early hours, Sarah couldnât get back to sleep. Her next problem was what to do about her hunch. Eventually, she decided she would tackle the scoutmaster in the Jolly Roger, as he seemed to spend large portions of his day there. Sheâd take her phone, ask him some pertinent questions, record the answers and play it all back for Mariella.
Then she wondered if she should just confide her suspicions directly to Mariella instead. Would Mariella take her seriously, though? Sheâd told her mother she didnât want amateurs meddling â and Sarah had nothing more than a hunch to go on.
No, her best bet was to confront Bill, and to do that, she had to wait for official opening time at the pub. But, by the time sheâd come to this conclusion, Sarah was wide awake.
At 6 a.m., after tossing and turning for what felt like hours, she gave up the attempt to go back to sleep. There was nothing for it but to get up and out. Hopefully a good long walk would help clear her mind, get ready for the ordeal ahead â and give her time to concoct some clever questions.
