Chapter Eleven

A few minutes later, they were back in Miles’s car. “I should check in with Dana and see when we’re all meeting up again,” he said. “She should be up by now. I probably don’t have a lot of time.”

Myrtle nodded. “That’s all good. I think we got just about everything from Dallas that we needed to.”

“He seemed like an affable fellow.”

Myrtle said, “Yes. He wasn’t terrifically upset by his brother’s demise. But he was very forthcoming when we were speaking to him. It was good to hear someone else’s take on our list of suspects.”

“He touched on most of them, didn’t he?” asked Miles. “Jo, Kingston, Flint, and even Anna.”

“Probably because he was trying to divert attention away from himself as a suspect. Not a bad idea, under the circumstances.”

Miles asked, “What did you make of the fact that Victor didn’t lend Dallas money when he asked him for it?”

“I think that could probably be Dallas’s primary motive for murdering Victor.”

Miles widened his eyes. “Even bigger than the prospect of inheriting Victor’s fortune? I’d have thought that was the bigger motive, since Dallas needs money so badly.”

“It’s certainly a good motive. I just don’t think it’s the better motive. I could tell by looking at Dallas how irritated he was over Victor turning him down. Plus, I recall Dallas being a hothead when he was in school and didn’t get his way. He seems much hotter tempered than Kingston does.”

They rode along in silence for a few minutes, thinking about their visit. Then Miles said, “What are your plans for the rest of the morning? More investigating? Or are you going to work on another story for Sloan?”

“I want a bit more information for the newspaper article before I write another one.”

“Really?” asked Miles. “It seems as if you’ve collected a pretty decent amount of information.”

“Oh, I have. But it’s all rather libelous. I need to have different sorts of information. No, I think I’ll need to find out what’s going on with the police side of the investigation now. See what Perkins and Red are thinking. Maybe they had some luck with fibers or footprints or DNA or something.” Myrtle sounded somewhat vague on the details.

Miles pulled into Myrtle’s driveway. “You think Red will share that with you?”

“It would be over his dead body, if he did. No, I might try Perkins again, although he politely declined to share much last time. But I was wondering if I might get a tidbit or two from my lovely daughter-in-law.”

Miles said, “I thought Red didn’t really talk about his cases with Elaine. I was under the impression that he realized she might have acted as an informant for you a couple of times in the past.”

“That’s very true. But Elaine is observant. She might have picked up on something.”

Miles glanced into his rearview mirror, frowning. “I’ll say she’s observant.”

“Hmm?”

“She appears to be staring at us through binoculars from her living room window,” said Miles slowly.

“Oh, she’s looking for birds,” said Myrtle in a breezy voice.
