Chapter 15

Paislee was on her third mug of strong tea the next day at Cashmere Crush, having not slept well the night before. Lydia had featured in her dreams, saved by the wedding photographer, and it was no surprise when her bestie arrived in person at half-past ten, her own eyes shadowed.

“I’d say guid morning, but it’s not been grand,” Lydia announced, dramatically dropping her designer handbag on the counter by the register. “Why lie?”

“Any more accidents?” Paislee’s pulse skipped as she studied Lydia head to toe for injuries. The sleeveless sundress paired with flat sandals were in charcoal and matched her eyes. Not a blemish to be found.

“No, no. But planning a funeral for someone so young is terrible. We stayed at the manor last night in Corbin’s room. I was given the cold shoulder by Garrison for not being there until after our Knit and Sip. I dinnae care. I needed my friends.”

“Corbin was upset with you?” Paislee picked up her hat project she was doing with circular needles.

“No, he understands and didnae mind waiting until I was ready, since we’re sharing my car.”

“Then the rest of them don’t matter.”

“That’s what he says, too.” Lydia sighed. “I love him. I look forward tae when we’re in our fifties, and this is a faded memory.”

Paislee glanced at Lydia. “How was Mary?”

“She’d gone tae bed with a headache, Garrison said. Hyacinth blamed you and I stopping by uninvited for upsetting her mother. Rosebud glared while going through pictures of Felice and the cousins. Chalmers was there, supporting Rosebud. Since Alexa pointed it oot, I see how he does everything for her. I feel sairy for the lad.”

“You could warn him,” Paislee said.

“The way he acts toward me? No, thanks.” Lydia sighed. “Oliver and Jocelyn were there, and Uncle Harry. So many tears. Uncle Philip. There’s an Uncle Peter on Corbin’s mother’s side who has three daughters that are all quite bonnie, and there were lots of jokes about kissing cousins. Drew had a crush on one, and Corbin got verra shy aboot it. I didnae press. I think it’s cute.”

“There is something to be said for being an only child. Besides, I had you.”

“Exactly! Besties forever.” Lydia peered into Paislee’s tea mug, which was down to an inch of cool liquid. “I should’ve brought coffee.”

“We have cans of fizzy water in the back,” she said. “Help yourself.”

Lydia groaned but retrieved a can of lemon water, and cracked the tab. “There’s no caffeine so this is tae keep hydrated, that’s all.”

“Still important! What are the Smythes up tae today?”

“Finalizing at the church for Felice tomorrow. Service is at eleven with a celebration-of-life buffet in the dining hall downstairs afterward.” Her mouth twisted. “Cannae imagine wanting tae eat, but I guess it’s what you do. You’re coming?”

“Yes. Grandpa, too. Brody is spending the night with Edwyn tonight and they’ve got a football game scheduled for tomorrow.”

“Look at you with free time on your hands,” Lydia teased.

“Free time for a funeral,” Paislee said. “Not my idea of how I want tae spend the day.
