CHAPTER 31

“Who were those guys last night, anyway?” Gin asked as we walked the next morning. “The ones who thought it was a good idea to tell Haskins how to do his job?”

“I never got a good look at them. I wouldn’t be surprised if they slid out early, to avoid both Lincoln and Park.” We’d all dispersed and gone home last night after the last item on the warrant was voted on. Our group hadn’t talked about the disruption at all.

“Yeah. But they called her by a nickname, so they probably went to school with her.”

“Right. The dude who spoke sounded youngish. Park sure looked shocked when he mentioned Kaycie,” I said.

“I know. And Haskins totally shut them down.”

A gust of wind nearly blew my ball cap off. But it was a warmer wind than in past days.

“I think spring might actually be getting close.” A movement in the sky made me glance up. “Gin, look.” I pointed to a large bird with both white and dark coloring beating its way toward the open water. “The ospreys are back.”

“They’re like a cross between a hawk and a seagull.”

“Ospreys are birds of prey, for sure. They just hang out in the same places where seagulls do.”

A bike bell dinged behind us. “On your left,” a man’s voice announced. He passed us, then braked to a stop, resting one foot on the path. We stopped, as well.

“ ’Morning, Mac, Gin,” August Jenkins said.

“Hey, August.” I smiled. “Out for an early sprint?”

“Yes. I like to get my cardio in before work.” He didn’t return the smile. His light eyes, which he must have gotten from Park, contrasted with skin more the tone of June’s.

“Are you involved in the murder investigation at all?” Gin asked.

I shot her a quick glance. Her question was more blunt than she usually was.

He couldn’t hide his wince. “No.”

“Because it’s a conflict of interest?” I kept my voice as gentle as I could.

“Yes. Both of you are in that book group, and Mac, I know you’ve had experience with past investigations. So you probably know they’re looking closely at both my father and my sister. Which is completely ludicrous, but they are, both Haskins and Johnson.”

August’s own grandmother thought Park was guilty. The guys at the back of the town hall believed Kassandra might be. I’d seen her and her father head in the direction of the bookstore’s back door in the hour before Norland found Wagner dead. I didn’t blame Lincoln for keeping the two Jenkinses on the list. I had nothing to say in response.

“I’m going to get going,” August said. “Have a nice walk.”

“Thanks,” I said. “Enjoy your ride.”

Head down, he pedaled away, picking up speed.

“Interesting,” I said as we resumed our own pace.

“Agree. I wonder if there’s something more he knows but isn’t saying.”

“Because he seemed so serious?”

“Yes. I mean, it is his sister and his father. It would be terribly serious if either of them was the killer.”

“Or both?” I asked. “What if they worked together to murder Wagner?”

“Ooh.
