The afternoon had grown warm, but that didn’t keep the inside of Larry’s truck from feeling frosty as he drove Rosa back to the Forrester mansion.

“Larry?” Rosa started before opening the passenger door. “It was a long time ago.”

“That song—”

“Could be about anybody. Or nobody. I’m not the only one who drives a white Corvette.”

“You’re the only one I know.” Larry lowered his chin. “That song was written recently. You bought your Corvette just this summer.” He let out a defeated breath. “I can’t help but feel the fool, Rosa. You and Miguel havin’ a secret past.”

“It was no secret.”

Larry’s eyes caught Rosa’s. “It was to me.”

Rosa felt sheepish. “Can I make it up to you?”

“I just need a bit of time.” He leaned over and gave Rosa a quick kiss on the cheek. “I told Dr. Philpott I’d stop in at the morgue and catch up on some paperwork.”

Rosa couldn’t tell if Larry had planned to go back to work all along or if he suddenly preferred to spend the rest of the day without her.

“All right,” she said. “Bye.” Then to her faithful cat, “Let’s go, Diego.”

The Forrester mansion housed six family members—Aunt Louisa, Grandma Sally, Clarence, Julie, Gloria, and Rosa—along with several staff members who worked in the house and the yards. There was always someone about, and Rosa made a point of remembering names and greeting each one with a smile.

Releasing Diego, she raced him upstairs to her bedroom, where she slipped out of her shoes and removed her hat and gloves. She washed her face and had just reapplied her makeup when one maid, Doris, knocked on her door. “Señora Gomez sent me to look for you. You have a telephone call.”

Rosa got to her feet. “Do you know who it is?”

“The police, miss.”

Rosa picked up the call from her aunt’s office.

“Got it, Señora Gomez,” she said into the receiver, and when Rosa heard the click from the housekeeper hanging up the kitchen telephone, she said, “Miss Reed here.”

“Rosa, it’s Miguel.”

“Hi.” Rosa’s mind flashed to the uncomfortable encounter at the farmers’ market. “If you’re calling about Carlotta,” or the song, “it’s nothing.”

“Carlotta is famous for talking before she thinks, but that’s not why I’m calling.”

“Okay?” Rosa prompted, her curiosity piqued. Miguel was quick to appease it.

“We have another body.”

“Oh no. Is it related to the Orlando Belmonte case?” She couldn’t think of reason why Miguel would feel compelled to tell her otherwise.

“Not officially, but I think there’s a connection.”

“Oh?”

“Jerry Glass is dead.”
