Chapter 18

Annie bustled along the corridor next to Jake. After her chat with Colton, she found Harry right away and asked him for a list of on-site staff members, in case the mysterious woman with the plum hair worked for The Lodges rather than as an outside contractor hired for the wedding. Jake had stumbled back inside from his own outdoor expedition, just as Harry printed the list of names for her and handed them over. The sheriff looked much less refreshed by his trip outside than Annie had felt.

“It’s beautiful but invigorating.” He rubbed his arms with his hands a little as Annie giggled.

“Maybe you should consider a better coat for winters around here.” She suggested. “Come on, we have a lead.”

He raised both eyebrows at her and followed her through the lobby blowing on his fingers. As they hurried towards Janet’s room, Annie explained her conversation with Colton the groomsman, as well as why she wanted the list. It had taken Jake a few moments to catch up with her train of thought, but he smiled as she explained herself.

“Are you sure you’re a baker?” he asked as they reached Janet’s door, and Annie rapped on it lightly. “You’d do great on the force.”

She smiled at him. “Thank you but I’ll stick with cakes,” she replied as Janet opened the door.

“Annie, Sheriff Hail. Is everything ok?” Janet asked.

“Actually.” Annie glanced at Jake who nodded for her to go on. “We were wondering if you could help us with a name.”

Janet frowned and opened the door, letting them inside. Her room was a little like Annie’s, though, Annie didn’t think the view was quite as nice looking out over the front of the hotel rather than the forest. Wedding things were scattered over the coffee table and chairs.

“Sorry.” Janet scooped them up and placed them on the spare single bed. “I thought I’d go through things while we were, erm, waiting.”

Annie looked around the room while Janet finished moving a few magazines. A photo sat on the little dressing table caught her eye. She smiled as she scooped it up. A smiling Janet, one leg stretched out in a funny pose, while beside her a blonde woman laughed uncontrollably at some unknown joke. The photo was cute, but it was the restaurant behind them that Annie remembered. She smiled and turned the frame around to Janet.

“Delaney’s.” She grinned.

“You know it?” Janet asked, stopping what she was doing and glancing at Annie. Jake frowned.

“I do. It was my favourite restaurant in the city; they have the best …”

“Carbonara,” Janet and Annie announced at the same time and laughed.

“They really do.” Janet smiled. She looked at the photo and sighed a little. “We used to go there for girls’ night, cocktails, and pizza, but on birthdays, it was always the carbonara. What about you?”

“Oh, I used to go there on date nights with my ex-husband,” Annie replied. She placed the photo back on the dresser. For a moment there was silence.

“Well, that killed the mood,” Jake announced.
