CHAPTER THIRTEEN
"Are you wearing a tinfoil hat?" Rex asked after he walked in the door holding two pizzas.
I adjusted the brim. "Yes. I have it on good authority that Philby might actually be attempting to melt my brain."
My cat and I had been staring at each other for ten minutes, and not once did I feel like I had to kowtow to her. Maybe there was something in this aluminum hat thing after all. She wasn't happy, but I felt like it was a win.
"Oh good," Rex said with a slight grin. "Maybe that's why you thought something crazy about Miranda and me. I'd suggest you keep wearing that around Philby."
"That was a deduction based on fact," I replied. "Not the cat's ability to manipulate brain waves."
He set the pizza on the table. "I was at both grocery stores today. There are people freaking out about an aluminum foil shortage. It got pretty weird. We had to bring in the sheriff for backup."
"Did you have Kevin with you?" Philby walked away, so I removed the hat. I would keep it close by though, just in caseâ¦
Rex collected plates and napkins from the kitchen and put them on the table. "He stayed behind at one of the stores to keep an eye on things until they close. I thought that might be a safe spot for him."
My husband handed me a napkin but did not take a slice of pizza. "Are you going to tell me what's going on with the case you're not supposed to be investigating?"
I took three, just in case he tried to take it away. "Are you going to tell me about the Miranda thing?"
Rex rubbed his face. He looked exhausted. "No, I'm not. I can't. Not yet at least."
"Then why should I tell you what I've learned so far?" The cat came back and jumped up on the table. I put the hat back on.
Philby's pupils were huge, and she crouched, wiggling her hips. Seconds later, she somehow managed to launch her bulk through the air onto my head. We went down to the floor, where she relieved me of my hat and trotted out of the room with her trophy.
I got back up and into my chair. At least she hadn't gone for my pizza. "She knows what the hat is for and can't stand it. Now I'll have to make another one."
"Merry, we need to talk about this," my husband insisted.
"Yes, we do," I replied. "I need to know about you and Mrs. Dooley."
Rex frowned. "How is it that you don't trust me? Do you really think I'd have an affair with Miranda?"
No, deep down, I didn't. But since he wasn't telling me what that was all about, I wasn't going to give him a break.
"I just think you're hiding something. And I don't like it. I mean, when have I ever done that to you?"
His mouth dropped open. "You're joking, right? All the time! You are always lying to me about investigating something that I've asked you not to.
