HeMT: The Platform for Human Translation and MT Evaluation

Because the MRT Project was intended to recruit translators and evaluators in China, Mexico, and the United States, it is important to have an integrated web system for creating reference translation and evaluation. Unable to find such a system, the MRT Project research team decided to build a platform using PHP and MySQL. As mentioned, PHP is a widely used scripting language for building powerful websites, and MySQL (http://www.mysql.com) is an open-source database management system that provides multilanguage support. After six months’ development, the system—called HeMT for Human evaluation of Machine Translation—was first released to translators as a web-based interactive platform for generating reference translations. It was then further developed for MT evaluation. The functions of HeMT (http://txcdk-iia.unt.edu/HeMT/) are described in more detail below.

HeMT is a multilingual, web-based database system that provides multiple data management and processing functions. This system serves as an example for library and information science practitioners and graduate students to learn database system design and implementation for multilingual users.
