Erin served Terry his dessert, some leftover cookies from the bakery, and sat down to help him eat them. The animals were happily munching on their own treats, though Orange Blossom had already gobbled up his and was eyeing K9’s biscuit in hopes of getting some of the crumbs.
“So you had a good day working with Willie?”
Terry shrugged. He looked pleasantly fatigued instead of anxious like he had the past few days. At least whatever they had been working on had helped him to forget his troubles for a while. Maybe there was some hope that he could be happy even if he could not get back onto active duty. Maybe he could find something else and be satisfied with it.
“Willie is a good guy,” Terry said slowly. “Not always above-board as far as the law is concerned… but still good-hearted and always eager to help a friend.”
Erin chuckled. “I guess being brought up in one of the clans, you couldn’t expect him to always toe the line as far as the law is concerned. But I think he tries.”
“He seems determined to only take honest work,” Terry said slowly, pondering it, “but as far as keeping to the letter of the law… he’s not so concerned about that.”
Erin nibbled at a chocolate chip cookie, hoping to make it last until Terry had cleared the rest off of the serving plate. “As long as he’s only taking honest work, why worry about it? Those other little things aren’t that much of a concern, are they?”
“Those little things can turn into big things. If you’re not going to let the law determine what is right and wrong, and you’re not following prescribed religious principles… then what you’re doing is deciding for yourself what is right and wrong, setting up your own system of morals… and that can be dangerous. You can justify anything if it benefits you.”
“But Willie…” Erin didn’t like it when Terry talked about Willie like he was a criminal. He wasn’t. He was a good guy like Terry had said, and he took good care of Vic, and he had helped Erin out at times when she had needed it. He wasn’t running with the clans or dealing drugs or doing anything else that made him a hazard to Erin or anyone else in Bald Eagle Falls. Terry made it sound like everything he did was shady, and like he was a psychopath who would take out anyone who got in his way. She didn’t like to think of Willie that way. “Willie wouldn’t do anything to harm any of us. You know that.”
Terry polished off another cookie and his hand hovered over the plate for a few seconds before he picked up a ginger snap. “I would trust Willie to take care of you girls and not to do anything to put anyone innocent in physical danger. But who knows what he did while he was a soldier with the Dysons? Trust me; they are not going to allow anyone who has been inducted into their ranks to get away with penny-ante stuff.
