CHAPTER 13

Charlene called Avery on her Bluetooth as she headed away from Franco’s house. She couldn’t believe Franco had teased her like that before shutting her out. The man had learned all about how to end a scene while earning his diploma.

If Franco didn’t have a job at the movie theater, what else could he do? Or did he make enough money playing poker so that Spellbound Movie Theater would be a social outlet more than money?

“Hello?” Avery answered on the second ring. “How did it go? I was starting to get worried it had been so long.”

“Franco was a wonderful host and offered me tea, even though I was pushy.” Charlene drove toward Salem at about five miles over the speed limit.

“You?” Avery said as if shocked.

Charlene ignored Avery’s sarcastic reply and checked her mirrors before switching lanes, then raised her foot off the gas pedal to keep from going close to ten miles an hour over. It was her weakness to speed. She wanted to be at her destination already and would welcome the invention of teleportation, in real life, with all her heart.

“Be nice.”

“Just kidding!” Avery giggled. “Did you find out what happened with the wolfsbane flowers?”

“I did—Franco tossed them out, thinking to help his pal Darren avoid an argument with Elise.” The pair had let their true colors shine at the theater, or maybe the stress from the launch had stripped the need to be polite.

“Oh, no. Where are they?” Avery asked. “Can we tell Sam and get them back?”

“The Dumpster has already been emptied.” Charlene reached for her sunglasses in the console and put them on. “The flowers are a non-issue.”

“Well,” Avery said, “did you find out about his relationship with Darren?”

“They were friends.” Charlene smacked the steering wheel. “You will never believe this—Darren was in the circus!”

“No way,” Avery said. “Wow. What do you think he was? A trapeze artist? A lion tamer? It had to be something cool.”

Hmm. Darren as a lion tamer? Maybe. He had a thick body, muscular. “Maybe Seth knows? Franco didn’t say.” She’d keep her humiliating exit to herself. Nobody needed to know that Franco had tweaked her good.

“I’ll text him. Are you on your way?”

“Yes. I have just enough time to go to Matthew’s before his shift starts at two. Darren is just having them do cleanup today, thank goodness.” Jack had sent her both Franco and Matthew’s addresses to her phone, so she would just need to pull it up.

“Seth told me! I’m glad. So, why go to Matthew’s?” Avery sounded exasperated.

“I want to get his take on the Shultzes’ marriage. Franco said he didn’t really see Elise and Darren interact very much. She was in the office, while they were getting the place ready. Also, to see if he felt like he was in danger of getting fired.” Charlene heard her defensive tone and took a breath.

“We know he was because Elise shouted it out,” Avery said. “Why don’t you come home, and I’ll make us chef salads.
