Chapter 20

The next day Alex sat with Michael in the war room, looking over Karla’s latest report. “They’re going to the Sloan Kettering Ball; it’s like two weeks from now. Maybe we could do something there,” Michael mused.

The conversation was interrupted by Danny Roe, who had the day shift on the Sutton Tower surveillance. Alex put the call on speaker. “Guys,” said Danny, “you can watch the video yourself, but I wanted to let you know what I heard them discussing this morning as soon as possible.”

“What have you got?” asked Michael.

“Simone, Hyde, and Pravdina were having a family breakfast in the dining room; Bijoux was serving. All kinds of weird shit was going down, no kidding, including Hyde making a lewd gesture with his tongue to Bijoux while no one was looking. Man, really sick. Anyway, Hyde makes his wife and daughter stand, and he does a critique on their outfits, which was another awkward moment, but then he starts complimenting his daughter on her great figure. The girl is eleven, right? Talking about how proud he is of her that she’s so slim and eats like a bird, that boys like that. The anorexic pep talk went on for a while and the mom, she’s trying to talk, but Hyde just keeps at it and babbles over her. But then, Hyde starts talking to Simone about Petunia.”

Alex darkened; his hackles rose as he leaned in. “What did he say, Danny?”

“He told Simone that he felt sorry for her. Alex, I don’t want to be repeating this shit, so I apologize, but I thought you’d want to know. He was going on about her looks, her dancing ability, her tragic father…you can imagine. He was painting a terrible picture about her and your family. He said that he knew—that it was fact and known all over town—that you were having an affair, and the family was in big trouble. ‘Like a house of cards,’ he said. Financial, everything. He said it was only a matter of time before it all came down on you. He told Simone to feel sorry for Petunia, and then sort of suggested that she put out the word to the other girls at the academy that they should keep an eye out on her too. Like watch for the inevitable—and I’m quoting here: ‘suicidal breakdown, because it’s coming.’”

Alex rubbed his mouth with his fist, trying to stay calm, his skin prickling with the first rushes of adrenaline.

“I’m really sorry, Alex, but I thought you’d want to know,” said Danny.

“Is he still in the apartment?” Michael asked.

“No, he left after breakfast, right after giving his family instructions to go out and make the Sutton name proud.”

“Okay, Danny. I’m glad you called. Let us know if you hear anything else,” said Michael. Alex gritted his teeth and glared at Michael, who shot him a look to stay calm and counseled him quietly: “Come on, Alex, we knew the man was scum. We knew that. Everything already supported it, so even though it’s hard to hear, we really shouldn’t be surprised.
