Chapter 18

“I’m telling you the truth,” Jamieson sounded exasperated. “I’ve never seen the cape before. I don’t have a clue how it got there. My trailer is unlocked; anyone could have put it inside. The cloth, yes, it’s mine. There are hundreds on set. We use them to keep the lenses clean. Half of the crew carry them. The lamp is mine.”

“I don’t think he did it,” Casey whispered to Annie.

They huddled in the small room behind the interrogation room. “Well, it doesn’t look good,” Annie replied. “Jake called to ask if his brother gave him the lamp, but there was no answer.” She glanced at Casey, “And he’s more focused on the cape and Mickala. Kidnapping trumps theft. Maybe we should take it over to Alistair, confirm it is his lamp. Without the theft, I can’t see a motive for Jamieson to kidnap Mickala.”

“It’s evidence; we can’t take it.”

“How about a couple of really good pictures of it?”

“I have that,” Casey smiled. “Dewey processed it straight away.” She pulled a face, “Jake probably wouldn’t like it.”

“Well, we can tell him later. It’ll save him time,” Annie suggested.

Casey bit her lip, “Let’s go.”

They slipped out of the room. Casey headed over to her desk and pulled up a file on her computer and printed out pictures of the lamp they had found in the trailer. Annie pulled them off the printer, and they headed towards the door.

“Heading out Casey?” Dewey asked, wandering to the front desk.

“Just to grab a pastry,” Annie replied with a smile. She grabbed Casey’s arm and almost dragged her out.

“What was that?”

“Do you really want to tell Dewey what we’re planning to do?” Annie asked.

Casey shook her head. “Should we actually get a pastry?”

Annie nodded, “We should. They always put Jake in a good mood, and I think we might need that when we tell him what Alistair has to say, good or bad.”
