Sadie rolled her eyes. “The cookies will get made faster if everyone stops watching the TikTok and helps me roll out this dough.”

“You roll out dough. I’ll make another TikTok,” Kendall countered, positioning her phone so she could take video of Sadie rolling out the dough and placing her pumpkin cookie cutter to cut out the shapes. “BakeryTok will love this.”

“Fine,” Sadie grumbled good-naturedly. “You handle our PR. I need it, but everyone else, grab a station and start rolling out. The food will be here in half an hour. I want to be baking by then!” Her crew, including Kamari, Max, and Jorge, hustled to do as they were told, bribed away from their Friday night plans by the promise of takeout from Get Rich or Thai Tryin’, the local Thai food truck, beer, and overtime. Aproned up, hair pulled back, and with clean hands, they got to work, Sadie supervising the non-professional bakers from her own station.

“1/4 inch there, Jorge. Those are too thick! Those are too thin, Kamari, start over.”

Kendall continued to film the process. “This stop-motion effect is perfect for putting the cookies on the pan. People are going to love it.”

They worked quickly, and the repetitive, familiar steps helped calm Sadie’s nerves. After talking to Mateo, Sadie had tried to call Merritt several times, but his phone had gone straight to a full voicemail box. Sadie had run to get Tyrone, happy to see him greeting her with a full body wag when he saw her. He trotted on the leash on the way home, Sadie clutching the football from Scenic View Realty, the anti-nausea prescription and a bag of treats they’d sent him home with in her hand. She’d let him in, made sure he was comfortable and he had access to the backyard, double-checked the locks on the pantry doors, and left him. She had dashed back to the bakery right at closing. It was then, after the closed sign had been flipped, that Kendall had discovered the sugar cookie dough Kayla had prepped before she’d left.

Sadie still felt a little sore that Kendall made the moment into a TikTok, but it already had over 100,000 views and she’d noticed the bakery’s Instagram gained followers significantly every time that happened. She supposed she could be the butt of the joke and look like an irresponsible businesswoman for laughs if it equaled future customers. Sadie couldn’t believe she’d forgotten the order of 500 pumpkin-shaped sugar cookies for the PTA pumpkin festival.

Even with Kayla leaving, Tyrone getting sick, discovering Sloan dead, Merritt showing up, rescuing Kendall from an uncertain situation, hiring a new employee, becoming the number one suspect in a murder, and then finding out Merritt was actually the number one suspect, she should’ve remembered this annual order. She was lucky Kendall figured it out when she did. They’d need to work hard to get them done before midnight, and the PTA was picking them up at 7 a.m. the next day for the festival.
