Chapter Ten

Jackson

When I ran into Natalie, a guest who’d been staying at my parents’ lodge for her cousin’s wedding, I hadn’t had an opinion about her one way or the other. When she’d asked me out on a date, I was still undecided as to my interest levels. However, on the short walk into town, she’d made it abundantly clear that she wanted to sleep with me so then, I did take notice.

I mean, who wouldn’t?

Natalie was drop dead gorgeous. She was young and vivacious and she was only staying in town for another couple of days. I’d have to be a fool to turn down no-strings-attached sex from a beautiful woman.

And I was no fool.

But when I looked across the bar and saw Coop seated at his usual table, kicking it with his buddies, I realized I was behaving exactly the way that he had for so many years and my interest in bedding Natalie plummeted. I sighed.

What the hell was I doing?

This wasn’t me.

When I glanced at the bar, Andrea was the first person to catch my eye and my first instinct was to feel a little satisfaction that she would tell Serena she’d seen me out on a date with a beautiful woman. But then I looked to Andrea’s right and realized that Andrea didn’t need to tell her a damn thing because Serena was sitting next to her and she was looking straight at me.

My gut clenched and my heart rose in my throat. I stared at her for a long moment before finally lifting my mouth into a friendly smile and my hand into a half-hearted wave.

Neither were returned.

Christ, what did she want from me?

Was this one of those situations where she didn’t want me for herself, but she didn’t want any other woman to have me either? Because I wasn’t going to stand for that.

“So, do you have any brothers and sisters, Jackson, or is it just you?” Natalie asked.

I hesitated. Did I really want to talk about my brother, Owen? I guess I didn’t have to go into detail.

“I have a younger brother,” I said, “But he’s a waste of space. He’s not around right now.”

“I see, so it’s just you and your parents rattling around in that big old house then, huh?”

“No, just my parents. I don’t live at the lodge. I stay in one of the cabins down by the river.”

She stared at me as if I’d just dropped the fact that I had an infectious disease casually into the conversation.

“Why would you stay in one of those when you’ve got that beautiful big house to live in?”

I shrugged. “I like the peace and quiet.”

Clearly, Natalie did not.

She didn’t seem to understand why I wouldn’t want to be lord of the manor up at the lodge.

“But you’ll live in it one day, right? I mean, after your parents die or something and you inherit the place?”

I frowned. What in the world was she going on about? And why was she talking about my parents dying?

“Uh, I don’t know,” I told her.
