We ate trail mix and chocolate for lunch. We could have cooked something more substantial, but neither of us wanted to go outside unless we had to. Emilia had tried again to improve my card skills, but her efforts were in vain.

After we’d eaten the last pieces of chocolate, I headed out to see how things looked. I didn’t know if we should risk it or wait another night. Now and then, I would duck my head outside to check on the snow.

I stood just outside the cabin. There were still patches of snow, but it was shallow and would continue to melt as we walked. Emilia stuffed her feet into her hiking boots and followed me outside.

‘It’s okay to go, but I think it’s too late in the day to set off now,’ I explained.

‘So you think we should wait until tomorrow?’

I nodded. ‘It would mean we could leave early and cover more ground.’

‘Okay,’ she agreed. ‘It’s so cold,’ she wrapped her arms around herself. We’d both adjusted to the warm glow of the fire. She looked up at the bright sky. ‘It’s hard to believe that this is the same place we arrived at a day ago. It’s like a different season.’

She walked down the stairs to the cabin and stood alongside me.

‘Hey.’ She reached out and wrapped her hand around my wrist. Her touch was gentle. I turned around, unsure of what she was about to say. She hesitated, as if she’d changed her mind. And then the words came out of her mouth. ‘I’m sorry.’

‘Sorry for what?’ I asked.

‘For everything that happened in Puerto Natales. For the way I treated you. You didn’t deserve that.’

Her hand slid down from my wrist to hold my hand. At first it was like a question, like she was testing the waters. I slipped my fingers in between hers and our hands entwined.

‘It’s okay. Don’t worry about it,’ I said. The intimacy of her gesture left me feeling light-headed.

She smiled, squeezed my hand and then let go. ‘I’ll be kind of sad to leave here. It’s been fun in a strange way.’

When she moved her hand away from mine, I felt a little cold. The touch of her hand against mine felt like it might mean something else. But I guessed that it didn’t.

‘Yeah, it has. It’s kind of cosy.’ I pulled myself together as best I could.

She nodded. ‘I miss proper food and coffee though.’

‘Well, with some luck we can have those tomorrow.’
