The Silver Star was pretty much what you'd expect in a gym. Lots of weights, lots of mirrors, lots of grunting. Some of it coming from the men.

Gyms were a place I generally tried to avoid. Mingling with hardbodies didn't do good things for my self-esteem. Besides, they didn't have kiddie weight sections to accommodate those of us who couldn't bench-press a Volkswagen. Much better to stay home and keep deluding myself that I was already in shape and that lying on the floor in corpse pose would keep me that way.

Curt was waiting at the entrance, his hair damp from the shower and already starting to wave adorably. He was wearing a black T-shirt under a leather jacket with jeans and carrying a gym bag. Even fully dressed, he looked more manly than the bearded grunters. Except for the Amazonian blonde doing squats with the entire weight stack. She had bigger thighs and a deeper five o'clock shadow.

Curt stepped in front of me to block any chance of Bull seeing me. Unfortunately, it also worked the other way. I couldn't see a thing.

"He's over there," he said, tipping his head back and to the right. "On the pec deck."

"Right." I got up on my toes to look over his shoulder. "What's a pec deck?"

Curt rolled his eyes. "He's doing flies."

"Right. Flies." I tried to go en pointe again and stumbled into Curt's chest, which wasn't a bad place to be, so I stayed there.

"She doesn't know what flies are," Maizy said. She took hold of my ears from behind and steered my face in the right direction. "That's got to be him over there."

It was. Bull was wearing loose shorts and a muscle shirt, and he looked somehow bigger than he'd looked behind a studio camera. And sweatier. When he stood up, he left a wet impression of his back on the machine.

"Eww," I said. "That's gross."

"Yeah." Curt shook his head. "It's also a violation of gym etiquette. You're supposed to wipe down the equipment after you use it."

"That's why I don't work out at a gym," I told him.

He grinned down at me. "Sure it is."

I stuck my hands on my hips. "Just so you know, I could lift these weights if I wanted to. I could lift just as many weights as she can." I pointed to Xena the Warrior Princess.

Maizy took a look. "Maybe not her. But him, for sure." She pointed to an elderly white-haired man in baggy spandex pants who was currently curling a two-pound dumbbell and struggling to do it.

So they did have a kiddie section after all.

Bull turned away, giving us a clear shot of the matted-down thicket on his back.

"Eww," I said again. "That's gross."

Curt's gaze followed Bull through a doorway out of sight. "That's the locker room. We'd better get to the car so we're ready to go when he comes out."

"He'll probably shower first," I said.

Curt snorted. "Does he look like the type who's gonna shower?"

My eyes went to the pec deck, which still bore traces of Bull's visit.
