THE SHOCK ON CHANTELLEâS face confirmed Lordâs suspicion about her being jealous. Though surprised, the discovery pleased him. Not that he liked making a woman jealous, but it meant she cared enough about him to feel such a strong emotion. Armed with this new knowledge, his determination to clear up the mess once and for all became a driving force. He wanted Chantelle in his life, and nothing would stand in his way.
âC-cousin?â
From her expression, he could tell she didnât quite believe what sheâd heard.
âYes. Not my girlfriend.â
âIf youâre related, why hasnât either of you mentioned this?â
âWeâve never claimed to be an item. People have just assumed we were.â As they presumed heâd slept with every woman heâd ever been seen with.
âBut you let them. Why would you want people to think your cousin was your girlfriend?â
It sounded awful when she put it that way. âWe thought it would be funny to see how presumptuous people can be.â
It was a stupid agreement he and Deconte had made when theyâd first discovered they were related about a year ago. Theyâd known each other for years, but sheâd always been Adonisâ off-limits half-sister. Last year, at his grandmotherâs funeral, theyâd discovered their grandmothers had been sisters. Despite their relation being several steps removed, matrilineal bonds were considered deeper in the Akan tradition.
Theyâd had a good laugh, because people kept commenting theyâd make an attractive couple. Theyâd had a few drinks, so when they agreed not to reveal their real connection except to close friends and family, it had seemed like a good joke. In retrospect, it had been a terrible idea. Now, it could have cost him Chantelleâs trust.
âI donât know what to believe.â
Believe me. The words popped into his mind, but he had a feeling âI donât lieâ wouldnât work this time. Instead, he threw her a challenge. âDonât believe me. Ask her.â
âButââ
âIâll introduce you.â This time, when he closed his hands around her upper arm, he didnât flinch when she tried to rip out of his grip.
Her eyes darted left and right. âWeâre going to attract attention.â
âI donât care.â
âWhat about your father?â
Touché, but he couldnât care less. His father had seen many unflattering pictures and stories about him in the papers. One more wouldnât destroy him. On the other hand, if this moment with Chantelle went wrong, he might never get it back.
âDonât worry,â he said. âThe press is more interested in the winners tonight, but Iâll release you if you promise not to run.â
âFine!â
âFine, what?â
âI promise not to run.â
He released her and led the way to where the actress stood.
âDeconte, thereâs someone Iâd like you to meet. Chantelle Sah from Odopa magazine.â He turned to her. âChantelle, my cousin, Deconte.â
Deconte raised her eyebrows in surprise. Shaking Chantelleâs hand, she said, âWell, if you revealed our little secret to her, then she must be special. How come Iâm only meeting her now?â
âYouâve been gallivanting all over the continent lately.â
âTrue.â She laughed. âI suppose Iâm going to my movie premiere alone.â
