THE SHOCK ON CHANTELLE’S face confirmed Lord’s suspicion about her being jealous. Though surprised, the discovery pleased him. Not that he liked making a woman jealous, but it meant she cared enough about him to feel such a strong emotion. Armed with this new knowledge, his determination to clear up the mess once and for all became a driving force. He wanted Chantelle in his life, and nothing would stand in his way.

“C-cousin?”

From her expression, he could tell she didn’t quite believe what she’d heard.

“Yes. Not my girlfriend.”

“If you’re related, why hasn’t either of you mentioned this?”

“We’ve never claimed to be an item. People have just assumed we were.” As they presumed he’d slept with every woman he’d ever been seen with.

“But you let them. Why would you want people to think your cousin was your girlfriend?”

It sounded awful when she put it that way. “We thought it would be funny to see how presumptuous people can be.”

It was a stupid agreement he and Deconte had made when they’d first discovered they were related about a year ago. They’d known each other for years, but she’d always been Adonis’ off-limits half-sister. Last year, at his grandmother’s funeral, they’d discovered their grandmothers had been sisters. Despite their relation being several steps removed, matrilineal bonds were considered deeper in the Akan tradition.

They’d had a good laugh, because people kept commenting they’d make an attractive couple. They’d had a few drinks, so when they agreed not to reveal their real connection except to close friends and family, it had seemed like a good joke. In retrospect, it had been a terrible idea. Now, it could have cost him Chantelle’s trust.

“I don’t know what to believe.”

Believe me. The words popped into his mind, but he had a feeling “I don’t lie” wouldn’t work this time. Instead, he threw her a challenge. “Don’t believe me. Ask her.”

“But—”

“I’ll introduce you.” This time, when he closed his hands around her upper arm, he didn’t flinch when she tried to rip out of his grip.

Her eyes darted left and right. “We’re going to attract attention.”

“I don’t care.”

“What about your father?”

Touché, but he couldn’t care less. His father had seen many unflattering pictures and stories about him in the papers. One more wouldn’t destroy him. On the other hand, if this moment with Chantelle went wrong, he might never get it back.

“Don’t worry,” he said. “The press is more interested in the winners tonight, but I’ll release you if you promise not to run.”

“Fine!”

“Fine, what?”

“I promise not to run.”

He released her and led the way to where the actress stood.

“Deconte, there’s someone I’d like you to meet. Chantelle Sah from Odopa magazine.” He turned to her. “Chantelle, my cousin, Deconte.”

Deconte raised her eyebrows in surprise. Shaking Chantelle’s hand, she said, “Well, if you revealed our little secret to her, then she must be special. How come I’m only meeting her now?”

“You’ve been gallivanting all over the continent lately.”

“True.” She laughed. “I suppose I’m going to my movie premiere alone.”

“After
