I spun, my wings making a wooshing sound. Frick. They felt so natural Iâd forgotten to tuck them back in.
Someone was crouching behind a parked car on the other side of the street. Using my wings for a boost of speed, I sprinted across and put them out of sight. The figure started to run, but I managed to launch myself at them in the nick of time.
We fell to the ground, the hit knocking the wind out of me. Something clacked against the sidewalk and slid away. A phone. The figure struggled out of my weak hold and rolled up, taking something out of their jeans. Lamplight reflected on a short blade with black squiggles.
Instinctively, I went up to my knees and lashed out. The knife was knocked out of their hold, and I tackled their midsection. We fell to the ground with a loud oomph. They landed a knee in my side. Ow. I lost my hold for a second, and they were up again, aiming a kick at my head.
I rolled away and sprang to my feet. They had taken something out again, not a blade this time but some small gadget. My brain identified it just in time before they lunged. I jumped out of the way of the stun gun, itâs t-t-t-t-t-t missing me by an inch. We seized each other for a heartbeat, and I finally got a good glimpse at their face.
âCole?â I asked, shocked.
He used my temporary distraction to strike. The Red Angelâs power still simmering close to the surface is the only thing that saved me. I moved much faster than Iâd have otherwise, turning on my side and taking a hold of Coleâs wrist. We struggled in an ugly meleeâhim trying to kick me or punch me with his free limbs, and me obstinately attempting to make him drop the stun gun. He threw us toward the wall, but I moved at the last second, and he took the brunt. Cursing, we went on the move again, stumbling across the sidewalkâhe meant to smash me against a parked car.
Some common sense made it through the adrenaline. I lengthened my fingers into claws, dug into his forearm.
He cried out and let the stun gun fall. I snatched it up and pressed it right into his midriff. A satisfying crackle overtook our panting, and then he was shaking and crumpling to the ground. I helped him land softly. Kinda.
Doubling over, hands on thighs, I took in big gulps of air and stared with increasing horror at the unconscious man sprawled in front of me.
Oh, man.
And it had to be Cole of all people.
I picked up his knife and used it on the remains of my T-shirt to fashion a gag for his mouth and a restraint for his wrists. His phone was still working but locked. Figured. Making the trip back to the other side of the street, I found my sneaker and retrieved my jacket, put it on, and zipped it up to my chin.
