A formal portrait of Dr. James Corning, circa 1920.

Dr. James Corning died in October 1923. If we recall, forty years prior, in 1882, Augustus had tried to find out information about Dr. Corning as a potential husband for his daughter. Specifically, Augustus was interested to know how competent a physician he was and his chances at being a success in life. According to Dr. Corning’s obituary, printed on November 1, 1923, Augustus had little to worry about. The obituary reads, in part:

Dr. James Leonard Corning, 68 years of age, of New York, who died recently at his summer home in Morristown, was noted for research work in the field of neurology, and as a writer on medical topics…

He obtained the M.D. degree at the University of Heidelberg and the University of Wurzberg. He married Miss Julia Crane of Morristown, in 1883.
