Step 9: Write Down Your Morning Routine

Step 9 is the simplest of the lot. But don’t underestimate its importance.

I’m an advocate of writing down your morning routine using pen and paper. Don’t trust your memory. Don’t put it in the cloud using Evernote or OneNote. Don’t put it into a Microsoft Word document.

Write it down on paper.

I recommend doing this for three reasons. First, writing focuses your mind on the item being written. Research shows that writing requires a different cognitive process than typing.[1] This process engages the brain in a unique way that leads to better comprehension and improved retention.

Second, writing down your morning routine eliminates the need to memorize it. I learned years ago that I couldn’t trust my memory. If I didn’t write things down, there was a good chance I’d forget about them. If you face the same challenge - frankly, I suspect most people do - you can easily solve it by writing down your routine.

Third, writing things down makes your intentions feel more salient. If you’re like me, it’ll make you feel more committed to achieving them. When you wake up and see your morning routine on paper, you’ll feel more inclined to perform it.
