“Is everybody here?” Brooke asked. She wore all black like the rest of them, with her hair tied up and in a baseball cap.

“Everybody but Annie.” Tess was in charge of this whole thing. “I didn’t ask her to come. She’s too vulnerable right now breastfeeding and taking care of Bridget. She burst into tears when I called to tell her what that asshole did to Mac. And Colin was out, but he’ll be beside himself.”

“We should go now, then.” Lynne this time.

“Yep.”

Like thieves in the night, the four Sisters of Fire walked the block from their cars to Mac’s house in single file. With them they carried boxes and black garbage bags. They’d already driven by her home to check that Franklin’s car wasn’t in the driveway and Tess had gotten out and snuck up to the front to make sure it wasn’t in the garage.

They were silent all the way to their destination. When they reached the sidewalk in front, they stopped. JJ sighed. Tess swallowed hard. Brooke and Lynne bumped shoulder-to-shoulder. This was going to be hard. Tess felt the need to say, “Let’s remember why we’re here. And what happened to our sister.”

They took the brick path to the front. There, Lynne peeked into the big bay window. “No trace of the asshole here.”

“If he is, we’ll get Mac’s stuff and leave. I’m not afraid of him.” Tess hadn’t always been so strong, but she’d had to develop a lot of qualities since her divorce. She had a key, so she unlocked the door. “Plan A is in effect.”

They went down the small hallway. The living room sprawled out before them, littered with spilled beer on the coffee table, empty chips bags, and God knew what caked on the leather couch.

Tess said, “Her bedroom is up the steps and down the corridor.”

“You guys go ahead,” JJ told them. “I’ll clean up this mess and pack up anything I find while I wait for my guys to come.”

The other two women followed Tess up the stairs and to the bedroom. “Fuck,” Lynne blurted out in the doorway. “This place is a disaster. Must be Franklin came home at some point.”

“Let’s set up the boxes.” Brooke’s tone was calming. She and Lynne took a portion of the room and Tess crossed into the bathroom. She threw toiletries into a container. And yuck, dirty clothes littered the floor. She picked them up as if they were contagious. She went back into the bedroom and swept stuff off the surface of one of the dressers and into the same box.

Brooke worked on the drawers.

Lynne emptied the closet, stuffing clothes willy-nilly into another container. “I want these fuckers to be as wrinkled as possible.”

That teased a reluctant smile from the others. Lynne never swore this much.

Tess rid the room of all fancy shoes and accessories. When she grabbed for the belts, she froze.

Brooke came up to her and squeezed her shoulder. “You’re wondering if he used those on her.”

Turning, with wet cheeks, Tess shook her head.
