NOAH WAS finishing his shift just as Sam arrived, panting slightly from his run from the car. It was drizzling, and he didnât have an umbrella, so he had water droplets clinging to the ends of his blond hair, which were now dripping to the floor. He shook his head, whipping his hair about, much like a dog shaking after a bath. Noah laughed, pulled him into a quick hug and then released him. The plan had been for Sam to pick Noah up and drive them both back to his place. He really wanted a chance to talk to Noah, to share his hurt and confusion.
âCome on, over here.â Noah propelled him to the nearest booth. âLetâs wait the rain out, as I donât fancy getting soaked. You must have parked miles away!â He grabbed a tea towel and flung it Samâs way before he called out to Phoebe, who was behind the counter working the coffee machine. âPhebes, two coffees when youâve got a minute.â
Sam looked gratefully at his friend as he toweled the remaining water from his face and hair. Noah slid into the seat opposite. âSo, Noah, whatâs new with you?â
âAh, nothing much new to report. Things here at the coffee shop are going great. Iâve even managed to give Phoebe a part-time job.â He indicated his little sister, who was making change at the register and chatting with an older couple as she served them. âBut Daniel has been in contact to say heâll be returning in a couple of months. Iâm not really sure what that will mean for me.â
Daniel Evans was the owner of Sunshine & Coffee but had been living in another state for the last few months, taking care of his mother and father since his father had suffered a stroke. His parents owned a small antique shop, and Daniel was taking care of business until his father could return to work, at least part-time. It had been a great opportunity for Noah, whoâd been left in charge.
âWell, that must mean that Mr. Evans is doing better, so thatâs a good thing, right?â
âSure. I guess Iâve just loved running things here, and Iâm not sure what Danielâs intentions are. I mean, I know I wonât lose my job, but I hate the uncertainty.â
Sam understood his friendâs worry and reached across the table to squeeze his hand.
âHey, whereâs the positive thinking? Arenât you the guy always telling me to look on the bright side and not dwell on things that might never happen?â
Noah smiled, a smile that went right to his eyes.
âOkay, knock it off you two!â Phoebe interrupted brightly, causing them to pull their hands apart quickly. She placed the coffees on the table.
âHi, Phebes,â Sam said. âGot time to join us?â
âThanks anyway, but Iâve got things to do, and you guys look like youâre in serious discussion. I think Iâll leave you to it.â She smiled and headed back to the counter.
Noah used the opportunity to pounce. âWe do have serious things to talk about.
