The death of children is one of the hardest things to deal with as a funeral director. It is un-natural that children should die before their parents. Whether the death is tragic or expected due to an illness, it is emotionally demanding. Being a father myself, I could empathise with the parents’ loss. Although I have never been through such a tragedy, I could relate to how I would possibly feel if I was in their shoes. However, whenever funeral directors were involved, any pain or suffering the child had endured was over. Personally, I could not be a doctor, nurse or ambulance worker who has to deal with these children when they are living. I can recall on several occasions wheeling a stretcher through the corridors of the Starship Children’s Hospital, here in Auckland. On those occasions I had been summonsed at the request of a family to uplift a child who had passed away. As I walked those corridors, respectfully I tried not to look into the rooms containing other parents’ sick children. However, at times it could not be helped. I felt so sad seeing kids in traction, kids in plaster, children with shaved heads, some with tubes entering their bodies or hooked up to monitoring machines. In my opinion, it takes a special kind of person who can tend to sick children on a daily basis. It is certainly not a job I could do. Thankfully, as a funeral director I never heard the cries of pain from a child or witnessed their tears. When I was involved, their suffering had passed and they were at peace.
