Chapter 6

With a start like Lydia had had that night, it was a surprise how quickly she got back to sleep, the shocks of the day immense. Knowing that Geoffrey had been in her bedroom left her with a warm sort of comfort. She wanted to believe that their conversation had happened, that he had left her with such a very intriguing reminder. Even if it hadn’t been real, one odd fact was clear. She had no idea how she’d managed to get into her pajamas.

The possibilities that mystery left open got her mind racing. She knew she should probably find it creepy, but oh, she didn’t. Only a bit of disappointment lingered. If her apparently angelic boss had changed her clothes, it was just typical of her luck that she’d been unconscious when it happened.

This was Geoffrey all over, as far as she could tell. There were always hints of sensuality about him, many moments when he treated her more like a potential lover than an employee, or even a friend. Maybe that was all part of the angelic service — although it put an entirely new twist on the whole “guardian angel” thing.

It was with these odd, if intriguing, questions that she eventually made her way out of bed the next morning. Try as she might, she couldn’t get the cats to confirm or deny any of her theories. For once, they were perfectly silent when she pleaded with them. Even her offer of doughnuts only made Eveningstar’s left ear twitch. They clearly had no intention of telling her the truth.

She made herself breakfast, focusing on not thinking about the possibility of Geoffrey’s hands upon her. She didn’t find it remotely unnerving that he might have touched her while she slept. It was clear that he would never do anything she wouldn’t want, her comfort with him total. While Damian probably wouldn’t be deterred by fully spiked and plated battle armor, the angel she was so attached to was, thankfully, not the same. She knew without question that it was not only her body she could entrust to his care.

Such a truth ignored the fact that she wanted very much to do far more than simply “entrust” herself to him. Lounging before him in the world’s least-subtle nightie, begging him to take her, might have more accurately expressed some of her desires. Still, she imagined that it wouldn’t have been a particularly convincing enticement. She had never even been in a real relationship. Seduction wasn’t exactly her forte.

This sad fact determined her mood. She made herself an egg in toast but only managed to pick at it, while the cats sat evaluating her from across the dining room. They were probably wondering why she’d stopped pestering them.

Then again, they probably already know.

Omniscience was definitely their neatest trick.

It was a little unnerving to know that your cats were far more knowledgeable than you were. She tried to console herself with the fact that they were no ordinary animals. Given
