AThe most common causes of carbon monoxide CO) deaths in homes are smoldering fireplaces and faulty heaters where the wood or the gas is not completely converted to carbon dioxide (CO2) but rather a considerable amount is converted to CO.

Your scenario is already fraught with danger because charcoal braziers are continuously emitting CO. The key for your killer is to lessen ventilation, so the CO more readily accumulates. Simply closing or covering windows and doors could ensure this.

How long would it take? There is no way to accurately determine that since it would depend on the amount of CO produced, the size of the room, the degree of residual ventilation, and the size, weight, and overall health of the victim. Anywhere from a couple of hours to overnight would be the ballpark, and of course this is a very broad range, which should give you great leeway in how you structure the plot.

The symptoms of CO poisoning are drowsiness and perhaps a headache. The victim will then go to sleep, lapse into a coma, and die from asphyxia.
