Chapter 14
After they checked in, they went into the room and Andrew laid his pack at the foot of the bed. Eve turned on the fan and closed the curtains. She was tempted to take off her clothes and lay naked in front of him, but she felt sweaty and dirty from the long bus ride. They were exhausted and discussed taking a short nap, but Eve decided to shower first. When she came out of the bathroom, she said, âLetâs see the beach. We can sleep later. Itâs too beautiful to sleep now.â
She went back into the bathroom to put on her bathing suit and Andrew pulled on nylon shorts. He took off his shoes and found sandals for his feet. His head and eyes were sore, but he wanted to see the beach so he took a Tylenol from his backpack and drank half a glass of water from a plastic bottle on the bureau. Eve emerged from the bathroom in a blue-and-yellow bikini, and Andrew tried not to stare at her, until she asked him to put sunscreen on her back and shoulders. He rubbed the white cream as she directed, far down her back, almost to where the bikini bottom began.
âDo you want me to put some on you?â
âWhat? Put what on?â
âDo you want some sunscreen? You should. Weâre on the equator. Youâll need to take off your t-shirt.â
âOh yeah, sure. Good idea. Thanks, yeah, it would be ironic to get a sunburn after almost freezing to death a few days ago,â he said.
âYes, well, weâve gone from Africaâs highest mountain to sea level,â she said. âIâm trying to look out for you.â
âThanks,â he said. âIâm not used to that.â
Andrew closed his eyes as he felt Eveâs hands rubbing the lotion in. At first he felt anxious as he tried to relax and allow Eve to touch his body. Her strong fingers found the spaces between his muscles, kneading them and pressing on the sore spots. He tried to ignore the pain and lay still, hoping not to discourage her massage, but she noticed his pulling away.
âSorry, too much?â
âYeah, I guess there are some sore spots from all the lifting and carrying I did. But it feels good. Really. Just a little softer.â He did not want to explain that he was always sensitive to any deep touch. He did not know why.
âOkay,â she said. âI want you to enjoy,â and she rubbed his skin gently all over. He could have drifted off to those delicious sensations, but Eve soon finished putting on the sunscreen and began to walk to the door, forcing Andrew to jump off the bed and follow her. âAll right, letâs go,â she said.
They walked past two young African boys kicking a ball in the street. They found the sidewalk with grass on both sides, and a rusted green sign and small cement monument describing this spot to be the exact location of a visit from the Portuguese explorer Vasco de Gama in 1498.
