Father Merle Harris sat in the quiet evening chapel before the statue of Jesus nailed to the cross, an enduring symbol of one person’s ultimate sacrifice for the greater good. The melancholy pastor couldn’t help wondering if he was living up to what Christ’s sacrifice meant to him, and whether or not he was living up to the example set by the Lord’s son… or if he was betraying it. He leaned on his knees in a position of reverence before the statue and all it represented to him and so many others for two thousand years, his rosaries in one hand and his firearm in the other, as if both were different tools towards a united purpose.

“My Lord Jesus Christ, am I doing the right thing? Am I doing your work, or have I fallen under the influence of Satan? Please give me guidance, for I cannot go to any of my fellow clergy over this matter. I have only you, and I cannot do with silence as a response. I need to know. Please do not let me stray from the path or falter before temptation. More importantly, please do not let me cause the others who now follow my lead to stray from that same path because of me. My own soul is one thing, but I cannot abide by turning the souls of others under my guidance into the hands of Satan.”

The priest closed his eyes tightly with his hands over his face as he meditated for several minutes, begging Jesus for a sign, or something – anything – other than just silence. Father Harris knew he had to work through this himself, but he needed counsel. And he needed it from the highest voice in the spiritual hierarchy which he dedicated his life and soul to.

A moment later, the tune of “Amazing Grace” could be heard stemming from his cell phone as it vibrated in his robe pocket. Knowing it must be a matter of great importance if anyone called him at this time of the night, he made a point to answer it. The call was from Fred Gifford.

“Father, have you heard?” Fred’s grating voice queried through the mini-speakers of the device.

“No, I haven’t, Fred,” Merle replied, “I haven’t been watching the news for some hours now. I have been in the chapel doing some work.”

“Well… those bastards… sorry, those ruffians in the New York Boys have done struck again. They raided Mr. Hefler’s drug store, since I guess he decided to hold out payin’ them any ‘protection’ cash. The man and his wife were… look, even I’m havin’ trouble sayin’ what was done to them. It was horrible. I thought you might want to know.”

Father Merle Harris sat silently for just a few seconds. “Yes, Fred, I… needed to hear this. After I complete Dee Dee’s firearm training tomorrow, and we say our prayers, I want you to meet us back here at 7 PM, no matter the weather conditions. Is that understood?”

“Yeah, man, of course it is.
