Bells and I sat in the car outside Luther’s coffee shop, listening to raindrops patter on the roof of the Gremlin. There were too many prying ears inside to discuss what we’d discovered, so here we sat. Even though I was seriously craving a double-shot mocha with extra chocolate syrup—and a shot of Bailey’s. Or a bourbon, neat. Maybe both.

“So, are you going to Samson with this?”

“I can’t, Bells. Not yet. Not until I have more proof that someone in the Pack is involved.” And not until I understood Samson’s connection to Maeve, if there even was one. For all I knew, Clarence might have been lying the whole time.

“Are you at least going to confront Sonny?” The accusation in her voice was evident, and it said, “Stop being a pussy about this, Colin.” I couldn’t blame her, because I felt like a bit of a wuss for not immediately going to the clubhouse to beat answers out of him. But I really didn’t have all the puzzle pieces yet, and it wouldn’t do me any good to waltz in and start making accusations. Especially since Sonny might not be at fault.

No, I needed more to go on than the ravings of a depraved, perpetually dying werewolf.

“I will, but I need another perspective on this first, from someone with good intel.”

“Maeve.” Her voice practically crackled with anger. Bells held a serious grudge against the old fae queen, blaming her for much of the misery that had befallen me of late.

“Hey, I don’t like her any more than you do. But she’s been my best source of info since I got back in the game.”

Bells snorted derisively. “You’re only back in the game because of Maeve. She’s been pulling your strings this whole time, and I don’t like it.” Belladonna placed a hand on the door latch. “Tell you what. You go run off and speak to The Red Queen, and I’ll swing by headquarters and see what I can dig up on the connection between Clarence and Sonny.”

“You want me to drop you off at Circle HQ?”

She shook her head and crinkled her nose. “Naw, I’ll have one of the research geeks swing by. I just need a few minutes with a latte and chocolate croissant before I deal with those guys.”

She glanced at me from beneath hooded eyes, and smiled shyly. I found her vulnerability disarming, and it occurred to me that in the close confines of the car, her scent was intoxicating. Either by instinct or common sense, I realized I might be losing her.

“Bells, are we ever going to talk about—you know—your family, and that plane ticket?”

She tilted her head, and the corner of her mouth turned up slightly. “Soon. I don’t want to think about it right now. I just want to enjoy whatever time we have, you know?”

I sighed heavily. “That worries me. All of a sudden you’re talking about not coming back, and acting as if we’re on borrowed time. Bells, I just got you.
