Petra stared after her for a moment before looking down at the page before her. She gulped and read it again as if she was uncertain of what the words meant. Book in hand, she hurried over to where the best linguistics students, Mistral, Lola Breslin, and Beltane, Hakon Buchannan, were sitting. Hakon gave her a look of loathing before putting down his quill and waiting to see what she had to say.

“Can you translate this?” she asked them and pointed to a few lines in the center of the page. “It looks like part of a verse from a poem.”

Lola took the book from Petra because it was obvious Hakon had no intention of touching it, and then all three mentally read out the verse.

“The blood of nine will time subside, the promise of hate, this song unbind,” Lola read aloud at last. “What in Merlin’s name does that mean?”

Hakon shook his head and glared at the Mistral with almost as much disgust as he had at Petra. “You idiot! How are you in Advanced Zetetic Studies with translations like that? It says, ‘The blood of nine will time unwind, the promise of hope, this song unbind.’”

Petra snatched the book out of their hands, muttered a “Thank you” and ran back to her seat. In minutes, she was furiously writing, and neither heard nor saw anyone else around her until Bryn dragged her out of the chair for dinner.

“You know,” Petra whispered as she leaned in over her beef and potato hotdish, “I don’t see why we need Alchemy to complete this spell. We should concentrate on charms, Zetetic Studies, and symbol translations.” She made sure only the witches and wizards in her immediate circle could hear her, and she was looking quizzically at Tyler when she said it. “Or those whose skills aren’t as obvious. Those people aren’t necessary to the task. I think we should keep this to as small a group as possible.”

Elowen paused eating and gave Petra a strange look, which wasn’t something anyone had seen her direct at Petra before. Then she slammed her fork down, narrowly missing Reuben. “You’re wrong. We all have a part to play. For all you know, Tyler’s psychopomp could be important to our futures, and Wicasa insisted on the best students of all the subjects. Books and words might be more important to you, but it isn’t everything. Do you think I’m less important because I’ve done nothing more than heal students for the past three weeks whenever I wasn’t dueling? That I have less of a right to help Karisa than you do?”

“What’s going on?” Karisa asked, taking in a red-faced, intimidating-looking Elowen glaring at a pale, surprised-looking Petra.

She kept her tone low despite more people were turning to look at the two witches now locked in a silent battle of wills. Petra was unlikely to back down, especially when she thought she was right, just as it was common knowledge the youngest Dunstan never backed down from a challenge either.
