Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library & Museum
Only a few original presidential birthplaces are still open to the public (that cabin in Kentucky probably isn’t the one where Lincoln was born), and this quaint city boasts one of them. The birthplace of the 28th president (18-24 N. Coalter St., 540/885-0897, www.woodrowwilson.org, 9 A.M.-5 P.M. Mon.-Sat., noon-5 P.M. Sun., reduced hours Nov.-Feb., $12 adults, $3 children 6-12) features period furniture; personal belongings; a collection of books, memoirs, and World War I volumes; and Wilson’s favorite 1919 Pierce-Arrow limousine. Boxwood gardens outside were restored in 1993 by the Garden Club of Virginia. Guided tours and exhibits trace his life from here to Princeton and the White House. (Wilson only lived here for the first year of his life before moving to Georgia, but what the heck, it’s a nice place.) Admission is free on his birthday, December 28.
