LYLE

Fury raged through me as I gripped the windowsill and stared at the light drizzle outside.

I’d been holding her, as she requested, until she’d fallen asleep.

And then her dreams had started.

Now I had moved as far away from her as possible, or else I was going to go mad.

So here I was, staring at the weather outside that better represented my current mood.

Dark and angry.

It wasn’t the kind of storm that would give humans plague. After a High Moon there was usually a small reprieve in that regard.

But I couldn’t leave, not until I knew Katlyn was okay.

She moaned in her sleep, clearly having a vivid dream of the sensual sort.

Sometimes she screamed.

And just now, she’d cried out with such force I had thought something was wrong—until she started to beg for more.

Indecision rooted me to the creaky wooden floor. A part of me wanted to leave, but another part knew she was burning with fever.

She was sick and I couldn’t leave her.

“Shadow,” she breathed.

The name made me see stars. She kept saying it, over and over again.

And I knew she was dreaming of him. One of her alphas.

Althea had told me of her mating to the alpha of each pack. Something about her destiny to unite the wolves.

I didn’t give two shits about wolf politics, much less uniting them.

In fact, it was the infighting between the wolves that gave humans a chance. If they quelled their differences, then what was left of humanity would finally be wiped out.

The last remaining human village had been more or less left alone simply because we weren’t worth the trouble. The wolves had other things taking their attention—like rivalries and pack politics.

Humans weren’t worth their time.

Until now, anyway.

With the alliance of Hunters and humans, wolves realized that we weren’t completely helpless. We could fight back, if given a chance.

Which put a target on our backs.

Katlyn made a sound again, one that stirred powerful emotions inside of me.

This was pure agony.

Cursing, I went back to her, because I wasn’t one to give up on Katlyn, not after everything we’d been through.

The damp rag I’d placed on her head needed replacing. I knelt and took it off, then dunked it into a bowl of cool water.

Her cheeks were flushed and her lips parted as her dreams consumed her.

And what a dream it must be.

Her fingers clenched into the furs I’d put around her, because despite her temperature, she shivered as if freezing.

I placed the cloth on her forehead again and frowned as it steamed.

She was literally burning up. How long was this damned wolf heat supposed to last?

“Hang in there, Kaitsja,” I said, using the old nickname for her. Although, it wasn’t just a name that had stuck around from childhood.

It was the name of her wolf—her hidden identity.

According to Daliah, she was more of a hybrid than a true wolf shifter, although she had been born with a wolf’s spirit inside of her. The way her aunt had explained it to me was that her wolf had been dormant until enough magic awakened it.
