On the opposite side of the sea near the intersection of Highway 86 and the Borrego-Salton Sea Way is Capt’n Jims (2108 Salton Arena St., Salton City, 760/394-1155, noon-8pm Mon.-Thurs., noon-1am Fri., 11am-2am Sat., 10am-8pm Sun.), a welcoming watering hole for locals, bikers, and travelers.
Getting There
When it comes to accommodations, food, and services around the Salton Sea, lower your expectations now. This is a remote desert region—distances are far and services are very, very few. Fill up the gas tank in Palm Springs or Indio before heading out here, and bring water and food.
From Palm Springs, take I-10 south for 24 miles to the split with Highway 86. To reach Salton City on the west side, follow Highway 86 south for 37 miles. To reach Bombay Beach on the east side, take Highway 111 south for 40 miles. Plan at least one hour for either drive.
