Grenfell Historic Properties
Start your discovery of everything Grenfell at the Grenfell Interpretation Centre (West St., 709/454-4010, July-Aug. daily 8am-5pm, Sept.-June Mon.-Fri. 8am-5pm, adult $10, senior $8, child $3). This large facility details Grenfell’s many and varied accomplishments, from the establishment of his first hospital at Battle Harbour to the work of the association that carries his name today. Grenfell also helped foster financial independence for remote outports through profitable organizations such as Grenfell Handicrafts, which still produces hand-embroidered cassocks, fox-trimmed parkas, hooked rugs, and jackets that are sold at a gift shop across from the admissions desk of the Grenfell Interpretation Centre.
Exit the museum through the tearoom and you come across the tiny Dock House Museum (July-Aug. daily 10am-4pm, free). Displays here describe how Grenfell’s ships were pulled from the water for repairs after long voyages to remote communities.
A tribute to the life and works of Dr. Grenfell lives in the Jordi Bonet Murals, impressive ceramic panels adorning the walls of the rotunda at the entrance to Curtis Memorial Hospital, which is across the road from the Grenfell Interpretation Centre.
Exhibits at the stately green-and-white Grenfell House Museum (July-Aug. daily 8am-5pm, Sept.-June Mon.-Fri. 8am-5pm, free with proof of paid admission to Interpretation Centre), his home for many years, describe Grenfell’s home and family life. The home is on the far side of the hospital, a five-minute walk from the Interpretation Centre. A trail starting from behind the home leads to Tea House Hill, where viewing platforms provide sweeping harbor views.
