Well-maintained grounds and friendly staff make Roosevelt Inn and Suites (2961 S. Broadway/Rte. 9, 800/524-9147, www.rooseveltsuites.com, $79-99 off-season, $195-255 racing season) a solid choice for reasonably priced lodging. Located a few miles out of town, the hotel has two tennis courts, a pool, health club, and day spa, all of which make this a popular spot for an off-season getaway.

Longfellows (500 Union Ave., 518/587-0108, www.longfellows.com, $145-165 off-season, $225-265 racing season), with its airy loft rooms built inside a renovated 1915 dairy barn, offers modern amenities. On-site casual dining choices include a tavern, courtyard, and fireside seating.

It’s hard to beat Gideon Putnam (24 Gideon Putnam Rd., 866/890-1171, www.gideonputnam.com, off-season $99-269, racing season $325-479) for location; the hotel enjoys pride of place in a particularly peaceful part of Saratoga Spa State Park, but is still close to downtown (a five-minute drive when there’s no traffic). Rooms are large and comfortable, and a restaurant is on-site for guests who don’t feel like venturing out for a meal. The hotel also manages the Roosevelt Baths; spa treatments can be booked directly through the concierge.
