Hurricane Turn Train
The Alaska Railroad’s Hurricane Turn Train (800/544-0552, alaskarailroad.com , mid-May-mid-Sept. Thurs.-Mon., Oct.-May first Thurs. of the month) is your window into the true Alaskan experience, both then and now. This is one of the last remaining flag stop trains in the world; it’ll stop for anyone who flags it down, anywhere along the line. Just as in the early days of homesteading, it’s the only lifeline connecting a few rural residents to town.
Locals also use the Hurricane Turn Train for access to privately owned cabins, hunting opportunities, and paddling trips (inflatable boats only), and the conductor provides fun, family-friendly narration along the way, stopping the train for photo ops and to let you get out and stretch your legs or explore historical sites. There’s no meal service and snacks are extremely limited, so bring your own food and plan to be out all day. Sit on the left side on the way out for beautiful views of the Big Su.
Another popular pastime is using the Hurricane Turn Train to haul camping equipment north, then catching a ride back a few days later. Again, before you go, make sure you have the right skills and equipment to camp in the Alaska backcountry. You won’t have cell service, there will be no paths to civilization, and you may encounter wild bears, moose, wolves, and swarms of mosquitoes.
