Trust your intuition, my love, and everything will be all right.

The Conqip raid the carts, barely breathing between bites. Permanent grins on their pasty faces.

“She has done well,” remarks Brix.

“Indeed, a fine choice.”

Brix inspects the candy’s delicate geometry. “This must be the new 3D fare? We really are down with the kids.”

“Down?” asks Aldon. “This product is rightfully ours, not some worthless kids’.”

“Err, one might say, ‘acquired’,” Travis splutters, licking the new tech candy, “but yeah, sure.”

“How very DARE you—”

“I thought…the tech came from ‘upstairs’?”

“You thought, you thought…”

Brix and Travis jolt back as Aldon lines up three icosahedrons on the table. Seizing a gold carving knife, he stabs each cage wildly in succession. Multicoloured shards fly in every direction.

Upstairs? wonders Nema. They must mean RW.

Izzy quivers at the same thought. “They nicked our tech,” she whispers as Adam and Nema bump her at once.

Brix cocks his head. “What was that?”

“Hearing things again?” says Travis, kicking his feet up.

“Shut up, shut up!” hollers Brix, clambering onto the table and cupping a hand to his ear.

Aldon leans forward in his grand armchair, crossing his arms over his legs. “How many times have I told you about extremities on the table.”

“Live a little, A!” shouts Brix.

Travis’ eyes go skew and, sure enough, his head drops, sinking face first into the gummy bear’s tummy. Brix glares at him disapprovingly before collapsing too into a heap on the table. Aldon flops back in his chair, letting his arms fling down. He snorts like a pig and, with a jolt, nods off to sleep.

“Quick,” Adam whispers to Nema, “get the silly costume off, so you can grab the key.”

She tips herself onto the floor, squirms out of the tube, and crawls over to Travis. Izzy grits her teeth and clasps her hands. With the Conqip’s arms conveniently wrapped round the bear’s middle, Nema reaches into his jacket pocket. She feels around the sticky rubble of a crushed tart and turns to her friends, shoulders hunched. She creeps round the Conqip to dip her hand in his other pocket…

CREAAAAAK!

“The door,” hisses Adam. “No—the other one.”

Nema hesitates as a door at the opposite end of the hall edges open and Poof Poof darts in.

“Mum,” cries Kitty, following right behind her.

“Darling, you must trim those wings of yours,” Poof screeches, almost rousing the Conqip. “Deary me, such utter chaos in here.”

“Mummy!”

“Can’t you see I’m busy!”

“Gajooms.”

Poof Poof swerves, peers down, and lunges at the sticks. “What’s this? G9? Or is it 8? Maybe 4? Something a little different about you this day, Gajoom.” She squints through her edgy little specs at Nema, all rumpled from hurriedly slipping back into her disguise. “Wouldn’t you agree, Kitty?”

Kitty hovers by her side, cackling and shaking her finger. “Yes. Mummy always right.”

Nema quickly realigns her tube while Poof Poof isn’t looking and shimmies back over to the others. Kitty zooms up and down the cluttered table, shaking her head. “No cake.”

Poof Poof dives round the carts and stalls over the 3D sweets. “What is this nonsense?” She hoists an icosahedron with her wand.
