“Please may we smoke sir?” from Fitz. “Guess your old man will move to a bigger house and stop talking to the neighbours,” remarked Don. “What about writing a book on how you rose from the ranks?” asked Gordie.

I evacuated the tent and sought out Poppa, between us we worked out a scheme. Later when I entered the tent the Rebels sprang to attention. “Carry on,” I advised them, “I was a private myself once.”

Poppa entered later and in a serious voice said to me “Corporal I want three men for a special piquet.” “Don, Fitz and Gordie,” I replied. “Gogg you put on a brew of tea for Poppa, Feathers and myself, after that you may take Horrie for a walk.” “Are you fair dinkum?” inquired Fitz. “Please refrain from using slang in the presence of your superiors,” I replied. I went down struggling and while pinned helplessly to the ground Horrie licked my face just to show there was no animosity.

We moved from our camp at Dier Suneid to Khassa. The area we occupied at Khassa was alongside the 2/1st Anti-Tank Regiment, just arrived back in Palestine after the Syria show. I laughed and told him that this was the Machine Gunners’ dog Horrie. Imshee he informed me had been with the Anti-Tank Regiment in Egypt, Greece and Syria. I replied that Horrie had not yet been in Syria but he was on a troopship that was bombed and sunk. “Guess that about evens things up,” he laughed.

Finding Mac I later asked him about Imshee. He told me that the little dog was the pet of one of their cooks and that the cook devoted more interest in preparing a meal for his little dog than he did for the troops. “She would probably appreciate it more anyway,” I laughed. While Mac and I were talking, Horrie wandered off around the camp. Calling him he came trotting back accompanied by Imshee. Very pleased with himself he introduced me to Imshee. I bent down and called her to me, she came to me but appeared a little timid. Horrie fussed about me and informed her everything was alright as I was a cobber of his.

Imshee seemed to be the same breed as Horrie, her colouring was exactly the same but she stood about two inches higher than Horrie and was not quite so deep in the chest, her tail was a little longer also. While Mac and I stood watching them, Imshee was plainly trying to capture the wog dog’s heart. Pretending to take no
